I have decided that life will not be complete without a Porsche, and the 924 appears to be very cheap.
Are there any major problems to look out for?
Are some parts particularly expensive?
Are most jobs practical for the home mechanic?
Any comments gratefully received,

8.1 hrs. for 924S/944"

If I recall correctly the 924 was fitted with a VW van engine and is the least desirable model. The 924S onwards had a proper Porsche engine. You'll find a lot of very useful information at the Hartech website - www.hartech.u-net.com

I think you will find that Ian Cook is right.The engine was basically from the LT28 light van.In fact you will find that a lot of the running gear came from more mundane VW cars.
If I remember rightly,Porsche designed this model for Audi who then decided not to produce it,so Porsche took it on.
I had a friend who bought a used one from a stockbrokers wife,and he ran for a year or so,but it never felt like a "real" Porsche.
The better model out of that mold was the 944.

The same logic can be applied to make the AudiTT the same as a Skoda Actavia. Having driven both I can confirm this is not the case.

Don't be put off too much by all this purist Porsche talk. Much of the 924 may be from a parts bin but it was designed and assembled by Porsche and can give good fun at a reasonable price with reliability. Yes, a 944 may have greater pedigree but scan the various Porsche web pages and you will find that 944 problems are more expensive to deal with.
If you want to snub your nose at the purists, go for a 924 turbo. It's kind of a halfway house in terms of maintenance cost but is a bit more exclusive. I tried out a LHD drive '79 one last year and it was noisy but fun to drive. Doubtful history put me off buying it although the chassis numbers did appear to match up.

Thanks for all the replies - some of the links are very useful and comprehensive.
I appreciate the 924 vs.944 arguments {"real" vs.VW)! However I cannot afford to buy and run a 944; I am interested to know if it is possible to run what is now a fairly old car at reasonable cost, hence my interest in the basic 924.

The TT is a ghastly looking creation, that can't tell whether to drive backwards or forwards!
