The car is a Xsara 1.4 petrol model. I would like your opinions on whether the mpg for the engine seems ok. I have used the brim the tank method, run for a while and fill her up- so i the figures are as accurate as possible.

1) 82 miles all around town, mainly short journeys 2-3 miles at a time, max 5 miles in one go. So lots of cold starts, but i only got 27 mpg (refill 13.9 litres @ 93ppl).

2) Just done 87 miles all motorway -Leicester to Solihull and back pretty much at indicated 80mph. got 53mpg (Refilled 7.5litres at 92ppl).

Obviously im v. happy with the later, but i was expecting 4-5 more mpg from town as most my driving is in town.

First one sounds about right, no egine will return good figures when always cold.

Bottom sounds a bit optomistic, I think it wasnt fully brimmed. I would expect about 45mpg for that one.

I know I've said this before, but ............

To get a reasonably representative average figure you need to carry out the calculation over a reasonable length of time ~ I would suggest one month minimum.

Fill up the tank to the brim, and take the odometer reading. Run the vehicle for a month and repeat. Record every drop of fuel which has been put in the tank during the month and then do the calculation. You can expect the figue to vary from month to month depending on the season (i.e. the weather), the type of journeys, your driving style and how new (tight) the engine is. Fuel consumption will be worse in the winter than in the summer ~ your assessment has been carried out during a cold winter.

Calculate the fuel consumption over periods of one month and then see what it's like in summer. You could be pleasantly surprised.

The only MPG that matters and provides accuracy is longer term as the snail states. 1000 miles or 4-6 tankfuls. This way you get your mileage for your types of journey mix.

The official urban mpg for a Citroën Xsara (1997-04) 3Dr Coupe 1.4i West Coast (98B) is 29.1, so 27 doesn't sound too far off.

i managed 60 mpg with the same 1.36 engine in a peugeot 306 style, crossing Europe on autobahns/autoroutes, slipstreaming lorries at 55mph. Nice engine.
