Is there any way of making a 5 year old leather steering wheel less slippy?

How about a suede brush?
I'm just guessing but I've just seen one in the local dry cleaners - it might roughen the leather up nicely...
You could also try cleaning it with alcohol to remove any grease thats making it slippy.

Best best is to get in the car, drape a towel over your lap, and scrub the wheel all over with a nail brush and some leather cleaner. You'd be amazed how much grime, scurve and dandruff comes off!
Then a brisk clean-up with a suede-type brush and a dollop of lather restoring cream.

They might feel nice to grip but on the last two cars I've owned they've been very annoying - my '96 Fiesta Ghia had a big stain on it's beige leather wheel where somebody had stuck some chewing gum on it before I bought it, and my current Focus leather wheel looks like someone has had a teething baby on their lap in the drivers seat and let it chew on the top of the wheel, lots of little chunks taken out!
