Hi BR's

After 3 relatively trouble free years with my L reg Audi 80, an unfortunate terminal subframe cracking and rusting which will cost nearly £500 pound to fix will render my car only fit for the scrapper. Shame really as bodywork wise and mechanical it is fine.

So...... I will be needing a new car

I have up to £1000 including any scrap value for mine to spend. Trawling autotrader and ebay with my budget reveals some suprises including

Rover 400 diesel 50,000 miles, very tidy and top spec
Vx Vectra 1999 SRI again tidy and pleny of Ford Escorts 1998-2000

I would love an Audi 80 Coupe but on my shoestring they have all been chavved or are in bad nick.

Diesel, petrol not bothered really. Would like under 100,000 miles as gives a few years use. I have 3 months tax/test on current car so have time to find a nice one before time is up.

Any suggestions to aid my search?

I have always liked these, even more so since FB was selling these

Would I be expecting to attain 30mpg (current 2.0 car does 30mpg) in moderate varied speed driving, may have a peek it is only 10 miles away. Is it a fair price for mileage?

The Mazda Xedos 6 was always considered to be a 'good' car, well respected and generally thought to be reliable. It is a Japanese built Japanese car, so should be very reliable.

As with anything at this price range, its the individual car itself and not the generality of the make and model that matter. I would have thought that larger, less economical, but better condition cars could be found for £1,000 than smaller superminis, although the additional features could go wrong.

Personally, I would have a good look at the Mazda and anything else of a similar size.

Buy another exactly the same as the first, and recover the crucial (expensive) parts off your old one and keep them in your garage...

Alternatively, make sure you put the old car on eBay, it will make much more than will the scrapper offer you.
Yet another new car thread - oldnotbold
Put the other one on Ebay with a month or two of MoT, of course.

Don't forget that amongst the tat, the are a few older Mondeos that are worth looking at. Find one with a fresh MoT and it's still not going to fetch more than £500 on a M-P plate.

A friend just sold a tidy, regularly serviced 80,000 mile 1.8LX on a T plate with air-con and 12 months MOT for £475. I drove that car last year and it was a peach.

If I needed another cheapy to get me out of trouble, I wouldn't even look at anything else. Loads around, good to drive, well built, very reliable and cheap to run.

Cheers

I was thinking of that option yesterday but after trawling the web and seeing more modern machinery, I have decided to get rid of the car either scrap or part x. Even though the body has no rust and runs well mechanically, it is getting too old now and even breakers dont have parts some of the time. Looking over all receipts (inc tyres and MOT fees) for the car over the last 3 years of my ownership adds to £1800, so not too expensive.

I have got the xedos 6 idea out of my head now, just wanted a V6 but need to keep realistic!

Based on past experience I would second the Mondeo suggestion. They are robust, reliable and nice to drive.

I have earmaked a couple of T reg Mundanos with 80-100,000 miles in my browser to view at the weekend.

Going to view a tidy VW golf later, bit older 1997 reg but looks good.

"just wanted a V6 but need to keep realistic!"

Nothing unrealistic about it. Mine does 30mpg, is silent at tickover, yet makes lovely growly noises when pressed. It will spoil you for anything less... :-)

I second Espada's comments. My Xedos is quite a bit older and still a pleasure to drive and look at. IIRC, the 'sport' model wasn't any quicker than the standard model - if anything, it had a lower detail spec (those look like wheel trims to me!).

I saw one fail to make £400 on Ebay recently, and a quick browse revealed this, which looks promising to me:

Caveat emptor, of course, but a good one will be a bargain.

Thanks for all replies so far,

The Golf was was very rusty on the rear arches so ticked that off the list.

Looking at a Mazda 626 1997 at the weekend in Barnsley

Looking at Volvo 850 1993 tonight in Doncaster

I will give each car a good look round and they both sound honest after hearing descriptions over the phone and what it says on the advert. Is there anything I need to look out particulary on the Volvo and Mazda? I dont expect perfection for these prices btw

The Volvo should be a 95 or 96 rather than 93. Should be cheaper than the more popular estate.
Yet another new car thread - TimOrridge
The volvo was N reg, wasnt in the best condition. No rush keep searching!

The scrap value for yours will be negligible, so rather thn spend £1,000 on a shot in the dark, I would spend the £500 needed to keep yours on the road. Better the devil you know!
Yet another new car thread - bell boy
i reckon if you did a google search of vw/hordy breakers you would come up trumps with a subframe, someone somewheres got one just over the rainbow from you :-)
i feel a fred coming on

OK, I have narrowed my search down to two cars;

On the Mazda, I am drawn to the jap reliability and looks good from the picutres. Sounds like a perky motor and lowish mileage.

On the Rover, I'm worried about the availability of spare parts. Can anyone advise if parts are/will be readily available to up to 3 years? Its 50,000 miles and diesel MPG is very appealing and bodywork/interior wise looks very good for age.

As for my current car, i have decided to let go at the best time. All the parts that have not failed upto now will start failing from now (whip in gearbox drive, still on original clutch, suspension creaking etc...) on and for me to righten them will would cost probably upto my budget. It has been a great car and will miss it but it is showing its 166,000 miles very clearly now.
Yet another new car thread - bell boy
they are both old cars now and i would be wary of either of them even though they both look and sound tip top
personally i would be looking for a 2.0 litre w reg primera manual
a proper well screwed together car ,good engine, economical and they are rot free if not been taxi-ing,they might be englatare built but they are as good as a japanese offering any day and are a good looking motor car

as I have posted on here before, I currently run an 'S' plate 626 2.0 SE with the 134 bhp engine. Bought 18 months ago as a short term stop gap between Subarus and whatever took my fancy. My fancy became several long trips abroad so i just kept it!
I paid £995 for it, and have since spent £600 on new Michelin Energys, belt change and full service. Now has 105k on the clock. Immaculate paintwork, absolutely no rust anywhere, cruises comfortably with all company repmobiles, and, provided I stay off the motorways (or drive slower on them) returns a consistent 38/42 mpg in mixed driving...i am sure the new tyres help.
The only downsides are unheated leather seats...erm, and thats it really.Oh, and I can leave it in places where I dare never leave my previous Elise.
Yet another new car thread - legacylad
If you can find a good Primera GT that would be my first choice. I looked hard and could not find one....
Yet another new car thread - TimOrridge
SO....

I bought the R Reg 626. Paod £100 deposit and pick up Monday. I think its the same 134bhp engines as legacy lads car. Had a little drive and it was very comfortable and lively. All electrics work and air con gets cold. Best bit was £225 trade in for my old Audi.

Total cost to change = £775 which gets me a 11 year old, 80,000 mile, 1 ownered, 12 month mot'd, recent cambelt (8k ago), well equipped car. Result for me at least.

Thanks for all replies.
Yet another new car thread - TimOrridge
Legacylad - Do you know if this Mazda is the 134bhp model like yours? Not bothered if it is the 114bhp model but the extra power would be nice!
Yet another new car thread - legacylad
Tim
if you refer to the links which you posted earlier, then the sales details indicate that it is the 134bhp model. Quite how you can quantify that i do not know...probably give engine number to Mazda and they may confirm it is correct.
It looks like you have got yourself a bargain....hope the paintwork is as flawless as mine.
Yet another new car thread - TimOrridge
Yeah, I wasnt too confident of the autofill on eBay. I?m sure I will notice if it is more powered, seeing as my old car has 115bhp but it felt really responsive on the test drive.

Paintwork is fantastic although there is a slight bit of brown (surface rust) on rear drivers wheel arch but can I can treat it before it develops.

One for Legacylad again;

What are service items (plugs, oil/air filters, brake bits) like for price/availability?

Will report back on how this one is, cant wait!.....

I have bought a new car now, pick oy up tomorrow

My decisions were;

Spend £500 on a car which cost me only £450 3 years ago didnt seem right
I fancied a change
Yet another new car thread - TimOrridge
I picked the R Reg Mazda 626 2.0 GSi up on Monday. I thought I would give you a short review/first impression;

Bodywork - Fantastic silver paintwork, shines really well with only minimal stone chips and only slight marks on the rear bumper.

Ride - Again years ahead of my old car, comfortable over the local rutted roads.

Engine - Much smoother and quieter than old car. Bit far to say that it feels nearly new, but not far off. Performance is big step up (134bhp). Fuel economy seems same as old car. It does not feel like an 11 year old car.

Interior - Unmarked interior (seats, dash) in light blue colour with exception of gear Nob which is badly worn (letterings). Velour seats very comfortable. Great layout of dash and centre console, aircon works as expected. Indicators on same side as European makes which is surprise for a jap car.

Insurance no different except for "admin charge"

Only bad point is the rear visibility is poor with the high back and spoiler but apart from that perfect.

Thanks for all your time and replies/suggestions.
