I noticed that my local VW franchised dealer has a "special £89" service going on at the moment.
What are the obvious catches to this offer? My Golf is a P-reg & it can still be included in the offer, which I find really strange! :-/

When they ring you telling you of the imminent large amount of repairs needed, it will make more sense ;-)

I think you'll find its content is not the same as for a scheduled service for newish cars, and it's specifically aimed at older cars. Ford have a similar scheme.
To satisfy yourself, enquire as to the difference.

Too right Stu! Last week I was in my local VW dealers picking up some touch up paint and whilst waiting for the parts chap to finish his break, I overheard two conversations with their service receptionist. The first one was telling the customer that the car was ready for collection but that the technician had a list of advisories including suspension bushes, brake discs and pads and rear silencer all needing attention. The second was telling the customer that a four wheel alignment was required and the cost was £140 and that apparently has been reduced from £230. Wonder if they've reduced their labour rates across the board by the same 39%?

Most of our local dealers of various makes do this sort of thing, and both the Honda and Mitsubishi dealer's £99 offers include pan-european breakdown and recovery which seems a remarkable deal.
However neither would stamp the service book at that price, despite the likelyhood that the service is no different from the annual oil change and inspection that is all most cars' servicing involves now.

Local Indie has a son that works for a large Scottish Dealer.
Under £100 services - nobody gets away with less than £200 as there are always add-ons - pads, wipers, bushes...............the list of possible repairs / replacements is endless.
|
|
If I booked in for a £100 service and was presented with a bill for £200 the dealer would rapidly find themselves removing the new wipers etc in order to avoid a major tantrum in the showroom.

No dealer has ever done more work on my car than they have been instructed by me to do.

Exactly, some people should learn to say, No thank you, OK, make a quote out for the work for when I collect the car and I'll compare quotes, I'll fit new wipers myself.

I got my Civic (6 years old) serviced under their "Level 1" scheme plus a brake fluid change and brake service for £108 - it did all that was actually needed as my mileage is low for the year. Service book stamped accordingly. It won't make any difference to resale a) because I'm passing it on; b) it has met all Honda Motor stipulated service requirements, so if i p/ex I'd get just as much or as little........

...No dealer has ever done more work on my car than they have been instructed by me to do. ..
Same here, although I suppose I usually give the go-ahead if (when) they ring to say it needs something extra.

Ford has a budget scheme for servicing older cars based around their Rapid Fit brand - details on the Ford website.

OK, we all moan about costs, but that's astonishingly cheap. Are you sure they charged you for the brake work?
As our Jazz is approaching 6yrs old, I'd be keen to know which dealership that is, please.

Have read this before. Do they offer any explanation or justification - something obvious missing, or is it just stamp duty?
|
Do they offer any explanation or justification...
Well, you never get a straight answer on anything at a dealership - they say it's because the service follows their own schedule rather than the manufacturers.
There's a bit of a row going on with Merc dealers at the moment as their servicing consists of basic A & B services, then a whole load of additional jobs depending on the age and mileage of the vehicle, which can easily treble the cost. People have been getting the basic job done and getting the stamp (so maintaining full MB service history) and then getting the additional work done elsewhere.
However now the dealers won't stamp the book unless ALL the work called for is done - their argument is that the service isn't complete.

When in my local VW dealer picking up a mate from work, I heard the service receptionist telling a punter that their Golf was ready to pick up after its 40,000 mile service, and the bill would come to £850 due to needing brake pads and discs all round, plus wiper blades.
I can't believe anyone considers a bill like that acceptable for consumables / routine service on a family shopping trolley.

I am glad people do find it acceptable (and probably almost normal). It makes it much easier when I put my bills out :) for far less.

Our local Toyota dealer- Pinkstones - gave me a FREE oil and filter change...
EDIT
The quoted costs for new disks and pads and bushes was £300 and I DIY'd for £130 parts.

My local dealer wanted £265 to carry out an Interval inspection service on my Jetta tdi. The service schedule says they do:
Date of the next service is to be entered on the door sticker
The battery is checked
Vehicle system test carried out
Engine oil changed and oil filter replaced.
Tread depth, condition, wear and pressure of all tyres inc spare are checked
Brake pad thickness front and rear checked
Service interval display is reset.
Got it done at my regular trusted Vauxhall dealer for £77 using genuine VW parts.
