02 1.9 What should I use to clean the MAF Sensor ? - 1964johnr
Posted before about a passat TDI with power problems. I want to take out the MAF Sensor and clean it, but have read that it is a very sensative part and needs to be cleaned with the right stuff. I've come across a specialist product produced by a company called CRC, but they are based in America. Anyone know of a similar product in the uk, or a good alternative ?

Before removing the MAF I'd suggest cleaning the connector plug -- it's usually the actual connection which causes the problems, as it carries a relatively high current to heat the MAF wires. This can cause arcing. Best to use a non-residue contact cleaner or tape head cleaner, or similar.

Might be worth popping the lid off the airbox and seeing what's in there too (4 spring clips, easy once you've removed the airbox cover).

The filter schedule is 40K miles. I had a look in mine at 20K miles from new and I was quite shocked at just how much debris there was in there .... literally handfuls of scraps of paper, bits of plastic bag, twigs, leaves, bird feathers and dust etc.

Because the Passat has a forward-facing air intake, it really hoovers in the debris. There could be some stuff choking the filter.

I used an electrical solvent cleaner. Don't touch the inside parts though.
