01 2.0 HDI Loss of power and strange sounds. - Rasher
Hi

My previous message did not post properly it seems. My wife reports her car (HT51 Plate 206 2 Lt HDI GLX) has lost power and engine sounds strange . Also there is a Diagnostics warning light illuminated on the dash. Car still drives but slowly. I researched this on the net and Im aware it could be any number of things but is there any tools I can by to get the fault codes myself without taking it to a pegueot garage or is that my only option? Im serving in Iraq so cannot do anything from here. Any help is appreciated

Kind Regards

Al

Good Morning Al

I also have an HDi Peugeot and when they work well they are fine and when there problems they can be very complicated, both to diagnose and to fix.

My thoughts, which may be added to and/or corrected by more learned posters are:-

1. The engine has gone into 'limp mode' and will not run properly until it is fixed (obviously)
2. This combined with sounding strange is a further concern and it is probably best not driven if this is a mechanical noise. Going into limp mode normally just limits engine performance but doesn't make it sound wrong, SFAIK.
3. I don 't think there is any code reader you could buy which would help you. There are literally thousande of error codes and, if you got them, what could you do with them?
4. I do not think there are many independent garages who have the expertise to deal with these fiendishly complicated fuel systems and I am afraid you are looking at potentially costly visit to a main dealer.

My good wishs for a speedy and not too costly 'fix'.

there are many independant garages with the expertise to fix your car, many above and beyond the abilities of the dealers its just finding one in your area. What area are you in and i will see if i can help.

I think you mean what area is his wife in...

Still, sounds helpful to me, must be a pig to be thousands of miles away and feeling helpless to stop your mrs getting burned at the dealers.

It does sound like it's in "limp-home mode", on HDis this usually stops the turbo spinning up so it will be slow. Ditto to not driving it, "strange sounds" could be anything from a split turbo duct to terminal engine failure.

I don't think there's a cheap tool that will read the codes from that age of diesel. Ideally you need someone with a dealer tool (Lexia/Actia) or if not another 'pro' tool. If you can find someone in the area will to help then a Bosch specialist could be a better bet than a main dealer.

Thanks for all your replies guys. Its a pain not being home as its hard to know if the engine is packed in or its just gone into safe mode. Well we are both from N.Ireland and my wife informs me that she called the local Peugeot garage and they quoted up to 60 depending on time to find fault. My neighbour told her to try a local garage that he used so I think we will try that next as I've given up on buying anything. Saw some device on Ebay that promises to find codes etc but im very sceptical so wont bother. I will post what it was when I find out the diagnosis. Cheer again.

Thanks Waterville

Checked out the site you mentioned but found that the 40 quid device is only for diesel's after 2004. I'll try this other garage as it will be cheaper hopefully. Probably pay big to get it sorted then i'll get rid me thinks.

Cheers

Al
