I live near Ashford in Kent and will be travelling to London, 4 people in total, on a Saturday morning for a day visit. We have previously travelled in by train, but this is 90 minutes plus on a 40-year old filthy train, full of drunks on the return journey.
My question for the great knowledge-base which is the back room is - does anyone have a better idea. The ideal for us would be to drive to a Zone 1 tube station and park, which we don't mind paying for.
Surely Park and Tube is do-able?
Thanks in advance for any tips and suggestions

Coming up from Southampton way I've used the Morden underground (south of Wimbledon) station on the Northern Line which takes about 25-30 mins? up to Waterloo. Parking around the station pretty good and fairly cheap. Not sure how practical that is for you though?

I've found that early on a Saturday is often Ok. I go in on the A2 - that's suprisingly clear most of the time.
That takes you near as damn it to the south circ. (Catford???).
Dunno where the nearest tube is.

Perhaps the wrong side of the river but shouldn't be too bad on a Sat am, what I use is park at Beckton near the end of Dockland Light railway. OK its not zone 1 but not particularly expensive either.
Loads of parking spaces, ASDA, Hotel car park, might even be an official one if you look hard enough. Never had any problem with being interfered with either.... the car I mean, oo errr missus!!

Suggest the large car park at North Greenwich Jubilee Line station (beside the Dome) where pay & display parking costs £4 for 24 hours.
North Greenwich is in zone 2. Journey time to central London is about 15-20 minutes.
It's an easy drive to N Greenwich station from Ashford using the M20/M25/A2/A102. Or take the M20/A20 then follow local roads to the A102 Blackwall Tunnel approach which leads to the Dome area where the car park is easily found.

Thanks for all the useful replies guys. I'm sure we'll try one - they all sound better than the train!

Yes - definitely doable. I come in from the North but use the furthest out tube station. If you are going to travel about London then a Rover ticket on the tube - 5 pounds each will get you anywhere on the tube all day. Even the journey in from a Zone 4? station will cost more than that! The cost of parking is 2.50 but both times I've been, on a Sunday, it's been free. Advantage of using far-out stations may be that the car-parks get less crowded.

I too live in Kent, and have found THE best secret in London parking. Park at the NCP Minories (very close to Tower Bridge City side) all day Saturday, Sunday or Bank Holidays for £2. (it is over £30 on a weekday). Minories car park is a 2 minute walk from Tower Hill (zone 1) tube station. I have parked there countless times both during the week and the weekend, and have NEVER had any problems. It is manned 24/7 which must help with security.
