Anyone else been taken in as I was by that newspaper ad for the Q7 - the one that says "After an accident, no-one asks how the car is" ? It took me a couple of looks to realize what they'd done - photographing the thing with nothing to give any impression of scale, and in a less aggressive colour than the black of most real Q7s. It manages to make it look almost svelte - and then you notice the child's face looking out from the back seat to add a comforting note of emotional blackmail.

I wonder if the same agency might take on the task of rehabilitating the Range Rover Sport - or is that a lost cause?

Given the onanist who pranged a Q7 at 120mph, killing a few folk - as widely reported elsewhere on the board - maybe this isn't such a great advert?

Bill Hicks was right...

I thought 'what's the point' when I first read about the Q7 but having seen a few in the metal I like them. Very quiet diesel too, at least from outside.

The Q5 TV ad is remarkably clever as well.

Probably the most intimidating car to be tailgated by. The grille looks like it could swallow you whole.

Thankfully, drivers of German 4x4s are not known for habitually tailgating people.

It's like the X5 - an ostentatious and vulgar car I really want to hate, but somehow have a sneaking admiration for. Couldn't ever see myself walking past something like an RS4 to buy one though.

Cheers

Saw a very nice looking 3.0 diesel one owner X5 for £15k at dealer. I hesitated, but only briefly.

Pal of mine paid over £50k for one of those after he had finished ticking boxes about 2.5 years ago.

He doesn't like talking about its value now. I have told him to just keep it forever.

The problem is - it may well last forever!
