hi guys i am a newbie so please be gentle , just receantly bought my 04 x type diesel @ £4000 with 110 k on the clock , the air bag light is permently on ??? i have been advised it might be a corroded connecter but the garage wants to charge a labour charge of £100 just to get the center arm rest out to get to the part . would a proper jag ecu diagnostic scanner sort my problem ??? also i noted on a sudden acceleration smoke plumes from the exhaust , when i felt in the exhaust pipe there was black soot deposits . thanks guys in anticipation chris .

First question is was the light on for the airbag before you bought the car?

The plumes of smone could be EGR valve - it happened on my Mondeo TDCi.

yes it was on when i bought the car , to give an accurate description the airbag light flickers on start up before it stays on permently .( i have been told that ecu scanning tools can pick up the codes from this flashing )

i ment to say thanks for your quick responce . yes have just read up on egr valve you mentioned , i will continue to monitor for next few days before i do anything regarding smoke , as its only on a sudden burst of acceleration at the mo. thanks appreciate your time and trouble .

All that is needed as a first step is to get the fault-codes in the airbag module read - and find out if there is crash data stored....

kk , thanks

I hope you realise with the airbag fault no airbags are functioning. Fine if you do not need them. This needs sorting as soon as you ca but could be costly.

Not to alarm you, but an airbag alarm fault on a VW I had took a lot of time (and parts) to resolve.

Question: does the insurance company need to know in the meantime?

yes i realise finding the solution may cost a few bob , i dont mind that as long as i am not ripped off , my son seems to think it depends on the type and quality of the ecu tester kit that gets to the root of the matter , with out going all round the houses as some garages may try to do . yes i realise the airbags would most probably not deploy while in this state . and insurance company is not informed at this moment in time , needless to say i can anticipate your next reply . continued regards and thanks for all who are trying to help me resolve this . chris .

All I can add is with my Passat with an airbag problem, it probably cost thousands in man hours and parts! And the "fix" was a hunch so might have come back after I got rid of it (lease car).

I wish you the best on this. With the airbag light on prior to purchase can we assume this was a bargain? I hope it was.

Chris,
Many independent garages will have a diagnostic tol that will "talk" to the airbag ECU to retreive the fault code. That said, Jaguar is often a bit of an odd one, so it may be better to either check with the garage first, or seek out a local Jaguar specialist. (I take it you are trying to stear clear of the dealer?)

Yes, these jobs can be expensive, but then again they can just be a simple corroded connector. As the light was on when you bought it, I would have thought that the previous owner may have got a garge to have a look before he sold the vehicle.
Did you purchse it privately? Or from a trader?

hi tony , cheers buddy for bothering to assist me, yes as i mentioned above some where i have been told it could be a corroded connector , the guy said it would take him all morning to get the middle arm rest out etc to get to the air bag module , i think me and my son could tackle that task ok , would we then actually see the module though once we took the center arm casing off ??? it would be great if it was just a simple task of cleaning up any corrosion that might be there . i bought from a dealer as a trade in verhicle with no warrenty what so ever but the jag actually belonged to one of the reps from the garage so i suspose a quick phone call to previous owner could shed some light . thanks all you guys out there and a happy and peacefull christmas to one and all chris .

& what are you going to do when you get to the module?. You need to take screwloose's advice & have a fault code read first!. For this you will need a jag Specialist as very few afetrmarket readers will read air bags on jaguars. the coding for access to the modules is different to fords. It may be something as simple as a steering wheel squib or even a flat battery whilst in the trade but as Screwloose has said its needs to be checked for crash data. Seat belt pre-tensioners & squibs are common.
As for the smoke it could be blocked air filter ( common as the flat filter is too small for the milage between services) EGR valve or injector coding. Jaguar have also done some software updates for these to stop the smoke so it may require a download, try some " comma injector majic 2000" ( Halfords )first in a full tank & run till empty & give a few good hard runs. I have had a few x-types that respond well to this treatment.
