Yaris 1.3 Buying advice - rogertb
I'm impressed by the latest sale discounts and having looked around have found the NEW prices compare well to the low mileage or ex demo values. I don't have loads of money but really need to buy something economical and about 1.300 ccs ... just help me out here and make a few comments, forgive me if this is a bit vague, put it down to age and mistrust and insecurity .... good of anyone to take the time - Roger

You have given far too little info for anyone to be able to offer you any useful advice.

What do you want the car for?

To carry one person or six? How many child seats do you need to fit in it?

Where will you use it? In town or on the motorways or in a remote mountainy area?

How long do you intend to keep it? (Some cars are good value as short terms buys, others less so)

How much mileage will you do? (Fuel economy becomes more critical with higher mileage)

What about luggage? Do you need lots of luggage space, or would you prefer a more compact car?

How much can you afford to spend on your car each year? Purchase price is only one of the costs of ownership, and if you don't have much money a three-year-old secondhand car will save you a small fortune

Sorry, i was having trouble with the PC and neglected to include the vital info ... I have, almost, decided on the yaris 1.3, I was thinking I'd buy a low mileage used or an ex demo but the 'new' prices are very good with the "Blue Moon" discount. Any comments very welcome

Ah, that's clearer.

Have you checked the price through the brokers, such as drivethedeal?

Also, remember that the advertised prices of secondhand cars may be much higher than they are actually selling for. Once you've got the brokers prices for comparison, it may be worthwhile trying to haggle down the price of a s/h one.

Don't buy the Yaris, I've driven dozens as hire cars over many thousands of miles and I don't rate them at all. Noisy and rattly with cheap fit and finish, especially in the badly-thought out load space.

The dash is like Marmite and I hate this central set up. It's done for cheapness of manufacture and means you have to avert your eyes from the road to see the speedo. If you must have a digital speedo then Honda's approach in the Civic - speedo in eye line at base of windscreen - seems much more sensible.

The Yaris is, in my opinion, one of the most over-rated cars out there. This and other boards have lots of criticisms of them and the owners are regarded as "unlucky". Other cars (like dare I say it the Civic) get tainted as "having loads of problems" for the same level of criticism.

Mazda 2 or Colt are much better cars for less money even with the desperate discounting Toyota are going in for.

DTD seem particularly cheap for Yarises at the moment. A 5-door 1.0 T3 (aircon etc) is around £7100, which seems like a bit of a bargain. The 1.3 5-door is around £7800 IIRC.

My daughter has a 1.0 Yaris and my wife a 1.3, both the older model. Both have given excellent service and no cause for concern. My daughter's was previously owned by my mother ( she has a newer one, no problems) and now has 86k on the clock and she regularly goes to Manchester, Birmingham, London etc (from Northampton) as part of her hectic social life and despite the abuse, servicing is regarded as optional and it is rarely cleaned, it just keeps going. The 1.0 is distinctly gutless and I would always go for the bigger engine. This makes for a reasonably nippy and comfortable ride and gives very good mpg as well, way over 40. Parts and servicing are cheap - brake pads about £35 and less than an hour to fit and tyres about £35 a corner as well - and it all just works. My wife would not dream of having anything else, she just loves the car. I am 6'4" and fit very comfortably and apart from an occasional rattle and the somewhat tinny and hence dent prone bodywork cant fault it. Her next car will be one for sure and in due course we will have the latest model with the fold flat seats. I really dont think you can too far wrong with a Yaris, but avoid the MMT box which by all reports is problematic and a bit clunky. Go for it, thoroughly recommended!

My daughter has a S/H 99 1.3 CDX 5 door.
I read the reviews which said the 1.0 was "buzzy" at speed and so opted for the 1.3.
As it was for long term use I got an up spec model but I guess all are now a higher spec.
It has A/C electric windows, sun roof & alloys. The CD player was a plus but who cares these days:-)
The 1.3 is fine for Mway use.
It has been very reliable. About 70K miles now.
Problems:- A bolt snapped that attaches front anti roll bar. More work required on said anti roll bar bushes. Very strange fault on the radio. IMO Spares are very expensive.
Some bulbs are push fit not bayonet.
I understand the boot is larger now.
I like it and drive it fairly often so a new model should be even better.

Wow- when we were looking at new Yari(?) in the summer, the 1.3TR, which is now priced at £7600, was £8900 (at DTD).

A couple of people on here have had problems with Yarises but they seem to have been unlucky. My elder daughter is on her third 1.3 Yaris and all have been excellent (no.3 obviously so far).

Definitely go for the 1.3 - the 1.0 is fairly sluggish and needs to be worked harder to make reasonable progress, thus not saving much in fuel consumption.

There's a 1.4 diesel which is worth a look if you do a high mileage.

Autocar has this week done a supermini group test and the Yaris came out second to the new Fiesta, beating all others. Third was the Mazda 2, also worth a look: so is the Suzuki Swift (fourth) which has a lower list price, but we found it carried a higher monthly charge on a PCP deal than the Yaris.

I think the new-shape Yaris is built in France and have seen one or two comments by unsatisfied buyers - check whatcar.com for the reader reviews (not really a representative sample but doesn't seem as good as the Jap/UK built Toyotas).

Our 02 reg mk1 Yaris was made in France, and has yet to have anything go wrong with it.

My advice is buy it .... but then I am biased !

Seriously though get the best price you can from a broker .. Drive the Deal seems to about the best ... print it off and give your local Toyota dealer 1 chance to match or beat it .. go along with the figures, deposit in hand and make it clear you are prepared to buy there and then if price is right.

Do it now rather than January and take delivery in December (to get best price) ..... just be prepared to be flexable on colour and spec.

If dealer wont play ball then use broker.

I would check out the used prices on the Toyota website and check within a driveable distance of your home - i.e. the Yaris sold by a dealer 50 miles away from me are notcieably cheaper than my local dealer.

I have a mark1 1.4D and recommend the diesel engined version; as for the car it eats front brake pads must be under engineered in that respect and the panels are flimsy also look at how easy it is to change the head light bulbs I can't change the nearside one on the mark1 there is not enough space to get my hand behind it: have been told the mark11 is more difficult. Drive a high mileage and the diesel fits the bill handling is nothing to write home about and it can be thrown about a bit by certain cambers on bends: still I know where they are now but it has left my heart in my throat.
As for space, it is pathetic; rear seats full forward and there is no rear leg room treat it as a two seater; in the end I bought an old Corolla diesel estate wagon and tend to use that as much as the Yaris. Fancy a Skoda Roomster or Colt to replace the two. Nope the Yaris just does not cut it in the practicality stakes.

That's a silly comment: practicality depends entirely on how you want to use the car.

If you need to carry four people plus significant luggage, then the Yaris will be impractically small; but if you only want to carry one or two people plus a bit of shopping, then the much longer Corolla estate will be less practical because it's harder to park in town. Horses for courses.

Hi Roger, I own a Yaris mark2, D4d(diesel) T3 version which is very versatile and has excellent economy . My family have owned Toyotas for the last 20 years due to their reliablity. However despite the 60k milage I have put on mine from new ( I service mine 3 times a year with toyota) I wouldn't go for one again . They are definatly not as reliable as the older toyotas in our experience . sorry if puts a spanner in the works for you, goodluck, Sheldon.

Thanks to one and all for the responses, a bit of a mixture but I guess that's bound to be, I had a Celica for 12 years, it just went on and on with no problems hence my renewed interest in Toyota (my Rover 75 has had it's day) so Sheldon's comment about Toyotas not being what they were was a bit worrying, anyway, I'll keep digging and thinking and I'll check out Drive the Deal as well. Thanks again, regards Roger (PS can't spot how to subscribe to a thread here) ?
Yaris 1.3 Buying advice - dylan
BTW Just in case Roger is still reading this thread, it seems the new facelifted Yaris is coming early next year and will use the new 1.33 dual vvti engine that has just appeared in the Auris. Higher power, lower emissions and better fuel economy accordingy to the specs. Some limited info here:

www.autointel.com/blog/?p=1785

Higher prices too, though, undoubtedly, and the worry of an new untested engine.

Anyway, the pending facelift helps explain the keen prices at brokers for the current model (as well as the credit crunch etc).
