Talking to a dealer today - they took in an absolutely unmarked 07 X-Trail Columbia, top spec, factory sat-nav, etc, for 9K
They tried to shift it at 10.5K, then 10, then 9, the a final desperate attempt at 8,500....no joy.
So, of to auction it went, and achieved £7,780!
Wish I'd known about it ;)

That's because [nearly all of] the people bidding at auction know their cars - you wouldn't want one of them as a gift....

'not want one as a gift'?
If we were talking about the Navara I could see your point - but the possible turbo issue on the X-Trail would be covered by the residual warranty, and even when the warranty has expired, you can replace a lot of turbo's for the huger saving on that car.
Less than 8K for a mint low mileage 2.2 diesel top-of-the-range X-Trail? Come on, try not to be so daft.

I would have had it for £8K

Pica,
I just wondered, do you drive a Lotus Elite?
JH
|
I am currently driving a CRV as a daily and a Mustang GT for weekends :)
Why?
|
Don't worry, I'm just showing my age. Pica / Elite were the only fonts available on typewriters. Joke. :-(
Mustang heh? Not bad. Which one?
JH
|
Ah I now see, I'm a bit slow tonight :)
Well I started my working life as a hot metal compositor (typesetter) and during my apprenticeship I was nicknamed Pica Thumper as I used to rush through my typesetting.
The Mustang is a 2006 GT Premium V8 4.6L (S197). I imported it new in 2006 at a good $ exchange rate and never looked back. That V8 is just superb, my next mod is a supercharger (the wife is being too sensible at the moment but I guess some jewellery might persuade her it's a good idea).
|
I bet it sounds fantastic. About $2 to the £ back then. Oh for a time machine!

Pica,
Myself and my fiance are recently returned from a touring holiday in N California where I have friends. We rented a pillar box red Mustang soft top in SF (only the 4.0 V6) and it made our holiday. Worth every penny!
For a wedding present we are seriously considering a folding hardtop MX5 (second hand) but we could both be so tempted by a Mustang V8 convertible...we have already looked on Autotrader and drooled. Quite a change from her company Passat Tdi...AND it would be my daily runner, although obviously her's at weekends!
|
Good to hear you liked the Stang.
There is a very good dedicated owners club for the Mustang www.mocgb.net The information and help you get from these guys is brilliant. The running costs on the Mustang is very good considering it is a muscle car.
If you liked the V6 then the V8 will blow you away :) More power, better brakes, better suspension and that V8 rumble :D The stock suspension is OK but it gets a bit twitchy on country roads but a £400 upgrade transforms the car.
Go for it!

Ah well, consider me suitably chastised -... snip... I'd much rather remove myself from your site... So, 'bye.
Bye then, Rob

oooh.
Looks like someone hasn't spent time lurcking at the back of the room before deciding to post.

A regular reader of HJ's offerings in the telegraph, I seem to remember him praising the X-Trail on a regular basis and often suggesting it as an alternative to various soft 4X4 SUV's.
|
They are usually referred to as the X-Fail in the trade.
It does illustrate the point though why at the moment most dealers would prefer to lose a sale than take a px on something they are not very sure of the market for.
|
'Good: Excellent, honest vehicle, decent to drive on road and best in class off road. Better than original Freelander.'.....
So what's happened to see it now being re named X-Fail ?
|
Perhaps
"Large number of turbo, intercooler and general quality problems have led me to withdraw my recommendation of the car."
|
my goodness you can never tell... the x-trail used to be such a "banker" now it's a .... yeah.
To be fair to HJ Nissan had a rep for building engines that could go to jupiter and back, what went wrong?
|
you have to admit HJ does tell it straight... I am sick of other papers' car sections that just repeat the mantra "see your main dealer". Where? In the bankruptcy court? Permit me to say, ROFL.

Which is a bit unfortunate for all those who took the original advice , however well meant and who now have a lemon in their garage.

I bought the wife an 06 X-Trail 2.5 auto last month for £9500, Aventura spec (even more goodies than Columbia). Car has 13K miles and manufacturer warranty until Mar 09. I negotiated the 2nd dealer service, which was due, and 12 months tax into the deal too. She loves it, and it's all Nissan, no Renault, built in Japan and tight as a drum. Cracking car, and the price of fuel has dropped. Mk1 X-trails are strong cars, just avoid the dCI.

Purchased X-Trail from new Jan 2005, have now had 3 turbos 1 @ 30,000 miles 1 @ 48,000 miles and the last one out of warranty @ 73,000, cost stated by dealer £1350 Nissan paid £680 and I was to pay balance but dealer never charged. Last 3 mile of my journey is in a 30mph zone so the cooling was ok.
I have a black Labrador so X-trail is great for that and I live in the boondocks. Great car to drive and reasonable fuel economy. Car now worth £7000 so will drive to destruction but it is still worth having dealer servicing.
|
For 8K I would have taken a chance on it. Roomiest car I have sat in but have been put off by turbo failure reports I have read online. Oh, and an ex-gf of mine thought they were ugly.
The cheapest I have seen a 1 yr old X-trail is 12.5K at a Motorpoint which I think was a petrol. It was next to several petrol RAV4s of a similar price.
Now, see that was a new model CRV I would have gone for it - cheapest of which I have seen have been less than 5K mileage 2007 diesels for £14,995 in a Cardiff dealer a couple of months ago. Had a few of them at the time but I decided to wait till the New Year to see if they came down to a more sensible price :-)

its strange how the xtrail has recently come near the top in a reliability survey, if its so poor.
I think the problem with the resale values of all 4x4 cars at the moment is due to the negative image being created by the comments of a ignorant few.
My last car a A4 was less economical than my 2.2 xtrail. and would have been in one of the highest tax bands.
All i can say is after 4 years of total reliability have have just ordered a new xtrail 171 at a knock down price, my son gets my 2004 sve for 4.5k.
Thats 30k on original brakes, exhast, and ive just changed two tyres that the fitter told would have got me through the test anyway.
Ive had the erg recall and hence no turbo failures.
First intercooler leaked oil in first year and was changed ,new design has sorted this.
Recall for fuel filler fitted.
oh and now and then alarm goes off for no reason.
And thats it, body has a 12 year warrentry and underneath is like new, it a great car.
And i have noted that those who have had turbo failures generally have two or three?

Off topic:
63k miles so far in 4 yrs in a CR-V petrol auto - avg. 29-30mpg, mixed driving.
12.5k, 25k, 37.5k, 50k, and (just had) 62.5k service - sum total of additional work: nil.
(Advisory: Some minor grooving on rear discs at last service/MOT but still working well so will leave for another year, front discs fine and pads still 50% left).
Makes me wonder why Honda don't offer 5+yr warranties as standard - that's a surefire way to elevate them above the mainstream that they've been desperate for for years.

I wish they'd do that too. I asked Service Manager at our local dealership about extending the warranty and he said, off the record obviously, that he didn't think it was worth it as most unlikely anything would go wrong, and, even if it did Honda has a good record for goodwill.
