Is it the right tyre? - the_bandit
Can anyone confirm the sidewall reading for a Michelin Primacy HP tyre that has been reinforced/rated as Extra Load?

I have just bought two new Michelin's to replace the Goodyear's that were on it before. My car is a 7 seater and comes as standard with "reinforced" tyres.

I've had Michelin before with the Pilot tread and these said "Extra Load" on the sidewall. All I can see on these is "215/60/16 VR" and then "RP". Is RP for Reinforced Ply or is this wishful thinking?

Don't want to ask the garage because they will just tell me they are the right ones without being certain!

Thanks.

Smokey,

There should also be a 'load rating' figure marked on the sidewall - something like "97V"

It's somewhat unusual to find the 'VR' marking nowadays, the size/rating is now more commonly given as: 215/60 R 16 97V for example.

I have Primacy HP's and they're both marked as OldSock suggests - there's amore basic marking and diametrically opposite is the detailed marking.

Michelin's website says:
"For certain dimensions you may find supplementary markings. For example, Extra Load (XL) or Reinforced (Reinf) indicates that the tyre has a higher load rating than would normally apply to this size. You should take account of tyre markings when replacing your tyres."

You could try emailing Michelin through the contact link on their webpage - although I never got a straight answer to my question (about Mercedes Option - MO - tyres).

Your quite right, it was just my interpretation of the tyre size and I typed it up wrong.

It reads "215 60 R 16 95V"

Looks like RP stands for "Rim Protector".

Haven't been able to contact Michelin today but think I have made some progress thanks to posters on this thread.

Michelin website quotes a load index of 99 for the reinforced tyre. Also checked some websites selling tyres and have seen both the standard Primacy HP and reinforced Primacy HP. The standard comes in at a load index of 95 and the reinforced at 99.

Also checked my older two tyres which have been on since new. They have a load index of 99.

So I'm 99.99% certain they have supplied the wrong tyres. Checked my invoice and it says that reinforced tyres should have been put on.

EL means extra load on those... seems like they are generally available as a 95 and 99 load rating across the barnds...

I'm going to ring Michelin tomorrow before I confront the garage.

Thanks for info.

PRIMACY HP Dimensions

215/60R16 95 V
215/60R16 95 W
215/60R16 99 H REINF.
215/60R16 99 V REINF.
LI : Load index SS : Speed Symbol

Quite clear then that reinforced tyre must have a Load Index of 99.

Confirmed by Michelin this morning. The 99 Load Index tyre is indeed the reinforced tyre and the 95 is not suitable for this car.

Oh dear ! Back to the garage again, and a main dealer too! tut tut.
