All the Presidents' Motors - NowWheels
The New York Times ran a pair of articles this week about Presidential motor cars, which have evolved over the last century from an off-the-shelf steam-driven car through limousines reinforced with armour-plating, to the latest creation which appears to be a completely custom-built car on a truck chassis.

The first article looks at the history: Executive Privilege, All Stretched Out and Armored, at www.nytimes.com/2008/11/02/automobiles/collectible...l

... and the second article is about the latest vehicle in the pipeline, complete with spy-shot: Presidential Power on the Road, at www.nytimes.com/2008/11/02/automobiles/02LIMO.html

The horrible hulking thing Bush gets carried around in - the doors are a foot or so thick and appear to be vacuum-proof like the airlock doors of a spacecraft - could almost certainly be fired into outer space without any immediate threat to the occupants. Perhaps someone will soon put it to the test. Seems a lot of protection for one carphound. Anyway they don't assassinate carphounds in the US, do they?

We are a long way from elegant coachbuilt Lincolns or Cadillacs with a couple of running boards and handles stuck on the outside for heavies...

you can bet your bottom dollar the commander in chief never has to raid local scrap yards for steel to reinforce his vehicle because its plan is so poorly thought out :-)
