GTi 2.0 not badged a GTi? - stunorthants26
I have a customer with a 2.0 GTi Golf on an 02 plate and she seems quite miffed that instead of a GTi badge on the back, its badged 2.0 - is this normal?

Also, I have it in my head that the 2.0 GTi isnt well regarded compated to the 1.8T? Is it just my imagination or is it the black sheep model?

Don't know the answer to your question Stu but for a bit of tangential observation, I would prefer such a car not to have the badge even if it was entitled to it.

not sure if it applied to this model

but i am aware that some golf models were not regarded as GTI's elsewhere in Europe but were shipped to the UK with a GTI badge stuck on them (for uk dealers), if you ordered a right hand drive UK spec GTI from a continetial dealer you would get the correct car but without the GTI badge, this happened to customers of people such as virgin cars

That does sound plausible - it is registered as a GTi but thats the only clue.
Its gone wrong 4 times in 3 weeks but luckily under warranty at the moment. Its a replacement ( swap ) for an older Golf she bought recently which had a terminal gerbox issue that was uneconomic to fix according to the supplying dealer, so he supplied this car as a replacement.
Personally, I think its been sitting around a while due to current climate and its particular model.

Totally agree HB... except I have a childish penchant for rat look or matt grey cars, could be a giveaway...

I looked into buying a Mk 4 GTi a few years ago. The 2.0 L is only c 100BHP and as earlier replies they were not badged as GTi's in any market except the UK.

Because of this its possible your customers car is either an import or the dealer simply forgot to put a GTi badge on it before delivery when it was new.

Stu,

You are correct the 2l is no ball of fire, more of a cruiser.

The 1.8T is more in the spirit of GTi

HJ ran, and spoke highly of a Leon Cupra with the same motor a couple of years back.

OK - it was more than decade ago, but I didn't then realise that dealers stick the badges on cars. I thought a member of the badge stickers union did it in the factory, but when we got a new Polo we found all the boot badges in the glove compartment. I remember walking around the streets trying to find new Polos so I could work out where to stick them.

PS There was craze for nicking VW grille badges a while back. My dad used to have a Golf and when I went through his effects a year or two ago I found a box with a grille badge in it and a letter from VW saying they'd sent him this badge "in case" his own one got nicked.

Is there anything she should watch out for with this model? She had a MK3 GTi before this one which was a joke, it didnt go for a month in the 4 years I knew it without a mechanical or electrical issue and given that her new one has broken down already, I wonder if her new one will be any better. She is so devoted to her GTis though - I told her buy a 2.0 Impreza next time!
