01 2.2 hdi shuts down and problems starting - abhinn
Hi guys looking for advice about 2 weeks ago I accelerated and the cur shut down no warning going from 2nd to 3rd gear just leaving a junction Light went off after a few hours andthen it happened again put a fault code reader on and it showed there were no codes. Cleared EML. Last Sunday the car started 2nd time then through out the week it has got worse. Put car to mechanic on Thursday as took ages to get car started he checked the fuel pump and cleaned out some of the plugs earths etc. As he is not a specialist he was unsure of what was causing this to happen.
Got car back last night and it took about 5 times to start. This morning it started 1st time took car to disused taxiway and got car up to about 70 mph and the magic beep and car cut out pretty dangerous thats why we got permission to try it off road, put code reader in no codes found cleared EML and drove home carefully then car wouldnt start. I think it has something to do with the fuel either when firing up or when asking for more but I am not sure. Bit scary as you lose confidence any ideas to what could be causing problem
Cheers in advance

Some very odd factors here..? It should use limp-home, not cut out.

First; what's the engine code - in the VIN number; either 4HZ or 4HX? Is the system Bosch or Siemens? [Does it have a tank-pump?]

Secondly; what are you reading it with, that can clear codes, but not read them first? If the light is on there are codes stored - probably PSA-specific ones that an EOBD reader won't access.

Definitely sounds like fuel-pressure; but there are many components involved, so caution is needed. When was the fuel filter last changed and has it always been run on pump diesel?

Hi cheers for quick reply, the code is VF38B4HXF81361813. Think the system is Bosch but when the fuel filter and housing was replaced in feb this year it was a mealee (not sure of spelling ) that it had been factory fitted even though Bosch was the one that came up when you put detaills in for.
Tank pump is that what you can access under the o/s back passenger seat if not how would I know.
I have an OEBD 2 code reader and the car has been run on pump diesel.
The car did go into limp home last year when I had problems with the FAP and it was replaced in Jan 08 but the car never shut down when the light came on that is what is freakin me out.
Also had timing belt changed Sept 07 starter motor in April and crank shaft pulley in Aug this year. Only got the car last Sept and have done 6000 miles Total milage is 66,000.

OK; that clarifies things a lot. An EOBD reader is useless on these and OBD-II is for US cars only. Any useful codes will be P1xxx format not P0xxx.

You can usually hear a tank pump running - or see the filter housing swell for 10 secs at just key-on.

You need to get the codes read with a proper scanner to find out what's going on. An injector leak-off rate test might show something too.
