A car thief who had his name and date of birth tattooed on his neck was caught after CCTV images of him were used to track him down.

The car had been left by Avon and Somerset Police officers with a covert camera concealed inside

Not the sharpest tool in the box!

Would it be cynical of me to suppose he still got a discount on his sentence for pleading guilty?

Does that mean a slight telling off rather than a slapped wrist? Oh sorry that would be corporal punishment and violate his human rights.

ID cards are a bad idea in some respects and I do not think they are needed - more police and immigration staff would be cheaper.

"ID necks" on the otherhand seems to be the way forward.

Which BR'er will write and tell Jacqui Smith (Home Secy) and Gordon Brown of a way forward to reduce crime in the UK and, unlike ID cards, has been proven to work.

"ID necks" on the otherhand seems to be the way forward.

"ID foreheads" would be better, ban headgear, and CCTV and speed cameras (motoring link) would identify all for our big brother state. Perhaps the Identity Agency could sell personalised IDs like DVLA.

Had a lot of coverage on our local news as local plod were keen to take full advantage of the positive spin, use of covert cars etc.

Was given seven months custodial sentence after asking for 10 other offences to be taken into account. Local news also mentioned that this was not his first custodial sentence this year and that he has a one month old baby, and cant read or write.

Looks like hes been a busy chap this year

If this car was setup with cameras etc to catch the scrots who still prey on parked cars, why was the evidence of his tatoo required, isn't there somebody monitoring the car and arresting the offender when they commit the crime.

The spin that has been put on this story implies that if it wasn't for his tatto he wouldn't have been caught (despite being known to the local BiB), so what is the point of the specially equipped car

Publicity for its own sake as far as I can see.

Our firm had a radio stolen from a car by someone with his hair dyed three colours-when we contacted the police, their answer was"Yes,we know him-we'll go round".Our local Post Office was held up by someone with a knife-got caught about a mile away and, with his previous record, was put inside.Within two days of coming out, held up same Post Office and was caught same place as before.

Obviously one of these people who can't get a job despite five A grades at what passes for A level these days.

Probably owed money to a gang who don't take no for an answer. Or maybe he wanted to keep "clean". Making sure the police could get him tucked up inside pronto, and no bail!
