Hi all,
I'm looking for a new Honda CRV 2.2 EX in nighthawk black, and the best price i can get at the moment is £23,399 OTR.
Reading about car sales, it seems that September is going to be another hard month. I need the car in December or January, so i have no time pressure really. Would people on here suggest taking the above price right now (secured for Dec/jan delivery) or should i wait until later in the year in the hope that prices will come down even further?
thanks for your opinions!
Honda Buyer.

I'm in a very similar position, buying wise, and looking at equivalent cars to the CR-V. You're saving about 12% there. Not a huge saving really.
I'm hanging on a while yet. There's little doubt that savings and incentives will only improve in the coming months.

In the last week I have began to see 2008 diesel models with as low as 1100 miles on the clock for £16,995, 2007 models for £14,995.
I am tempted I have to say but think I will hold on for another month or so as I think we need some time for the B&B collapse et al to sink in to the brains of car salesmen and estate agents - the days of easy money are over and car and house prices will have to adjust accordingly.
The prices that I have begun to see are, in my mind, evidence of the dire sales in the car market and that Honda are not immune to the slump. If anything, IMPO, if you can now buy a pre-reg Focus or Astra from a car supermarket for as little as 8K then most people are going to do that over the likes of a VW or Honda or Toyota now as the difference in price is just too huge... probably explains why we are starting to see big reductions on Toyotas reported on this site.
This credit crunch is only just begining. An entire generation of sales people and estate agents have never known any recession and have grown up in an era of easy credit - this is considered worse than 1929. Go figure.
Speech over.

I am unsure if I read the following here or elsewhere but someone had an Xtrail on a 07 plate that cost them £24K and the trade in being offered now is £10.5K !
The 8K option sounds sensible to me
|
Hi all,
in my case, it has to be a new car as i am getting it via a car allowance from work (and it being new is one of the stipulations).
The x-trail story sounds scary! i better make sure i don't get the car and then get fired, otherwise i'll be in trouble trying to sell it!

My son was offered only £14.5K for his 3.0d SE X5
I think it is nearly £40K new - I do not really like it - too big - but at £14K I will take it off his hands for that money. He was looking at a £30K car (2nd hand) a the BMW dealer!
|
I assume that's a Mk1 X5.....the 5-seat only variety

I'm seriously tempted by that kind of thing - I don't do many miles in my own car which makes something like an X5 bearable on total cost, but on the other hand not using it much means the cost per mile becomes ridiculous!

Hi all in my case it has to be a new car as i am getting it via a car allowance from work (and it being new is one of the stipulations).
Read on a Toyota forum recently of a chap who bougth a RAV4 back in Jan of this year, went back in early Summer and they offered around 12K for it.
Are you sure about your work car allowance stipulating that you have to have a new car - all the companies that I have worked for have basically given you the cash as part of the package no matter what car you have had?
I can understand them asking for it to be a newish car if you are entertaining clients - how sad is that and how sad is this country for having such status 'values' - but I have never heard of any company forcing you to buy a new car?
Actually, I am not sure if they can legally enforce that as you are taxed on that car allowance as if it is salary.
Also, with new cars depreciating that much - what is it between your new CRV and the 2008 reg ones I saw last week? About 6K - are you saying your company is forcing you to take a big financial loss merely for working for them? (Again, you are taxed on the car allowance as if salary therefore effectively part of your salary is being forced to buy a 23K car that will be worth many thousands less in a few months. Goodness, sounds a pretty not clued up organisation to work for.)
I doubt they tell you what to do with your wages each month?
|
Why not just lease one from a specialist, your cost of ownership/use will be cheaper than buying it yourself.

Also, what happens if you buy this 23K car and next month your firm makes you redundant due to the credit crunch?

That happened to me. Believe me, it's pretty painful having to carry on shelling out for an expensive car when you've no income. In the current climate, if you really do have to buy something new, then I'd politely decline. Negative equity is bad enough on a house, let alone a heavily depreciating asset like a car.
Either that, or have you considered hiring something? Companies like Europcar will do long term hires - probably more expensive than a PCP or similar, but with the advantage that you can return the car at short notice and walk away.

After tonight's massacre on Wall Street we could see loads of companies laying people off in the coming weeks if not days. Firms simply will not have the money to pay their bills because the banks are not paying them. There are numerous house hold names that are potentially in trouble within a few days if they cannot extend their loan facilities.
Now is not the time to buy a new car, especially if it is connected to your job.

BBC Points West (Bristol) had a news item plus film etc., on Monday 29 Sep 08, in which Honda announced that they were reducing production at their Swindon Plant from 250,000 vehicles a year to 200,000 with almost immediate effect.
This means, I feel, that they are stabilising production against anticipated/hoped for sales and they will maintain the present sales prices accordingly. A salesman interviewed at a local Honda franchise on the same programme more or less confirmed this.
Since I am a Honda CRVIII owner (April, 2007), my experience dictates that early January,2009, when the days are pretty dark and customers, scarce, is a good time to place an order. I did a very good deal at that time but perhaps the present world financial situation will cast another slant.
Incidentally. in the same programme, Honda Swindon advised that they are to produce the Honda Jazz at their(Swindon) plant in the near future. Sorry, I can't remember exactly when, but in 6/9 months, I think. At present, it seems, that all Jazz cars imported into the UK are produced in their Japanese plants.

Oh! - Now that's something that I haven't heard before! Jazz's for UK have been made in China for the last couple of years and, as far as I'm aware, the new one is coming from there too. This is a bit of an issue for me, so a UK assembled one would be good news.

Sorry to reply to my own post (too late to edit): The BBC report video is here, but it's wrong about Jazz only being made in Japan: news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/7642967.stm

Further to my earlier post regarding Honda (Swindon) and my personal experience of buying a new CRV, I feel that I should add that I am fortunate in living some 15 miles from two Honda dealers (one in Bristol, the other Weston Super Mare), so I found it possible to obtain a price from each.
Both dealers were pleased to "compete" for the business and I largely opted for the one giving the best part exchange against the one who offered extra equipment/free annual servicing, etc., because of smaller dealership size and ease of motorway access.
Have you tried getting a price from several dealers, if possible?
