05 2.2 iCTDi: feedback through steering wheel - Statistical outlier
I have noticed a degree of gearbox shunt recently on my Accord. There is now some takeup in the system that there didn't used to be, not surprising at 72k miles I suppose.

However, I have noticed that you can now distinctly feel the takeup of power, expecially in first and second, through the steering wheel. It's a distinct feeling of movement along the axis of the steering column, rather than rotational feedback. It's very noticable in 1st and 2nd, but there in all five.

Should I be concerned? Any ideas what might be causing it? All thoughts before I go off to be told there's noting wrong much appreciated.

Two thoughts:

1/ Many cars have colapsible steering columns that need to be correctly preset, I had a clonk on a Vectra that was found to be this, likewise my Mondeo needed this attending to once when new (first or second service IIRC), I could feel a very slight clonk when going on and off the power with left hand lock on, been OK since.

2/ Engine mounting(s), I can feel a very slight senation as you describe on the Mondeo now (130k miles), when going on and off the power in second and third, reckon it might be the top right hand side engine mount which is hydraulic, this stops the engine moving backwards under power and forwards under engine braking and is perhaps unlikely to be quite as effective now as it was when new. This was also redesigned on later models, perhaps simply to save costs though perhaps an improved design.

engine mountings would be my first port of call

Cheddar, is that redesign you mention on the Mondeo or the Accord? I'd like to be able to cite something specific if I go in, as otherwise the 'they all do that' argument is likely to surface immediately, especially as it's a small (but worsening) effect.

Sorry GM, Mondeo, I was just musing and the Mondeo has done twice the mileage though I would ask the dealer to comment on the engine mountings.
