Best disks and pads for Nissan Primastar - Hugo {P}
Main dealer has quoted some £600 to replace all disks and pads on thie vehicle.

It is a LWB Primastar on a 54 plate and has the 1870cc diesel turbo.

I'm thinking I can get it done cheaper at the local independent garage. I've just checked on the Car Parts Direct site and they are quoting £152 for a set of rear disks.

Are these any better than the ones the main deler would fit?

Thanks

It depends on whether you value the cost above your safety and the safety of other road users.

The genuine Renault boxed pads I bought for the Scenic recently had a tiny "Ferodo" stamp on the backing plate. Presumably identical Ferodo boxed pads were £5 cheaper!

Car braking systems aren't manufactured by the vehicle manufacturer, but assembled from third party manufactured parts. As long as you fit known brand parts from a reputable source they'll be fine.

Your local independent should be full of knowledge about what parts Nissan use and the alternatives available. As DP says there are only so many companies making brake components.

You can ask him to use genuine Nissan parts, he should still be cheaper than a main dealer.

That would be my preferred route**. You are then sure that the parts are correct.

** Although I would be fitting them myself rather than using an independant garage!

Regarding cost above safety is merely scaring you; its the tactics a main dealer would use!

I personally would fit a brand I know and trust (Ferodo, mintex, delphi etc) in preference to main dealer parts which are quite pssible to come from 2 different souces (ie discs and pads).

Nissan dont manufacture the brake components; they are bought in.

At dealer level it is also possible for aftermarket parts (of unknown brand to you) to be fitted but charged at normal prices. On the invoice would be a little *, with a small note atached stating that the parts used are of a traceable source etc! And before anybody dismisses this; it is factual and supported by proof not opinion!

Fitting what you know and trust, to me anyway, is far more likely to inspire confidence and safety above anything else!

Ido advise against ebay and other such "unknowns" when purchasing safety critical parts!

Nissan don't manufacture the van either -- Renault do. I'd be tempted to look up the prices for the Vauxhall equivalent of this van -- likely to be cheaper than quotes for the Nissan variant.

Who actually make the parts is entirely beside the point. Buying original parts means that you buy them to the correct, original specification.

Yes, Mintex, Ferodo, Delphi are fine, decent quality parts, and the safety point is scaremongering if such quality parts are used. However, if rubbish from Ebay is fitted, then, who knows what sort of quality you're getting.

In my experience there's less chance of comeback from niggling problems like brake squeal when you fit the original parts.

At under 17,000 miles??? That would take some justifying?

I'm just offering up this site for your consideration and/or others opinion.
I have not used the Co. personally, but would consider them if and when I needed service items for my Nissan. ~ www.partsplazaltd.co.uk/workshops.aspx

Hence my comment about my experience with the Scenic. Renault pads (for the Scenic at least) are made by Ferodo. The Ferodo logo is not in the same size print as the big Renault logo and Renault part numbers on the pad backing, but definitely there. ;-)

All the factors in my area sell brake parts from recognised manufacturers. Ferodo, Delphi, Bosch, Mintex and Bendix are readily available. Mintex also do "brake boxes" with a pair of new discs and a matched pad set all in a box, at very reasonable prices. That's what I bought for the Volvo, at a couple of quid less than the main dealer wanted for a pair of discs alone.

Cheers

Thanks guys,

So we're looking at Ferodo or similar. I actually already have a new set of front pads for the vehicle, dealer swapped them for a set that I had for my old renault trafic.

So, I would only need the disks and the rear pads.

NC - I take your point about fitting them myself. However I am really busy at the moment and simply don't have the time, plus I would have to do it in the road.

I've looked at car parts direct - looks like around £152 for each set of discs plus £20 for the remaining set of pads, hence I'm probably looking at around £325 for the parts.

I'm thinking 4 hours labour to change the disks and pads @ £35 an hour plus vat - maybe £165.

That makes £490.

I'll see what my independent comes back with - he was going to get me a price.

Sorry Hugo, I wasn't suggesting that you *should* do the brakes yourself, just saying in passing that *I* would. It is in the labour where you might be able to make the largest saving - but, if you are using the time to earn money at a better rate, and don't have the space/facilities, then, of course, it doesn't make sense.

My main point was to make sure that you fit good quality parts, from a known source. Again, for *me*, it would have to be genuine parts from a dealer, but, I know, as YB says, that brands like Ferodo, Mintex, and Delphi are OK too.
