2000 1.9 TDi are tuning boxes on ebay worth it ? - jimbano
Hi,

I have a 2000my audi a4 tdi 90bhp, which i now feel lacks a bit of power, therefore i am considering buying one of the many tdi tuning boxes bieng offered for sale on e-bay. Does anyone know if these boxes work and are they worth the money? is there anything to watch out for?
Any help will be appreciated
Thanks

James

Snake oil

Most just tell the module that the engine is still "cold" so it puts in extra fuel.

Thats it and extra resistor 5p from maplins if you want to do it yourself.

They aren't snake oil, they all work, just in different ways. Some plug into the fuel temp sensor, but others are more sophisticated.

The ones that plug into the fuel temp sensor are crude but effective. I ran one for several thousand miles on my Passat 130 and it made a clear difference to in-gear wallop (around 0.4 - 0.5 seconds off the 40-60 time in 4th), without a major impact on mpg.

Of course, you don't get something for nothing. On the cruder devices (like the one I had fitted) the throttle response became much more sensitive, and was hard to modulate at town speeds, which got tiresome.

I,ve checked the plug to the fuel pump and it is an 8 pin plug, with only 7 pins actually in use.

The ones that bypass the fuel rail pressure sensor are simply a 100ohm potentiometer mounted in a box surrounded by potting compound and have a sticker saying 'digital something or other'. All it does is fools the ecu into demanding marginally higher rail pressure - While being crude and ever so over priced, they do work. I tried it out last year, turned my van (80ps) into a regular rocket!, but took it off right away as i need reliability and didn't know what any long term problems may occur (see my other thread about a noisy engine - could be related!)

The ones on ebay are best avoided, prsoanlly I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole. What guarantee do they provide against not damaging the engine etc. !

Firstly you need to consider contacting your insurance company and ensuring they will cover this modification, if they won't cover then you'll need to find someone who will, otherwise your current car insurance will be null and void and you'd be driving without motor insurance were such a device fitted.

As already mentioned check out the ones for sale via www.dieselpowertuning.co.uk (DPT) as they come with a 3 year warrantee if fitted by one of their recommended garages. They also provide recommended insurance companies who will provide insurance, full details on their web site. The device is designed to operate within the design parameters for any given car. The device can be tuned for economy, performance or various combinations of the two.

I have recently fitted one of the DPT units to my car and it really does make a noticable improvement to fuel economy, performance and drivability. I went for the default settings plus additional low down torque.
