96 1.8 Speedo and rev counter problems - logo5961
Looking for a bit of help/advice. 1996 pug 406 1.8 16 valve has a couple of problems with the tempremental french electrics

1) When i turn on the ignition, but before i start the engine the tacho needle jumps to 1000rpm. Once the engine is running the tacho seems to work ok but shows about a 1000rpm too high

2) The speedo has now started to play up once the car starts to move the needle shoots straight up to 40 mph. It then appears to work ok although still reading high. But when you stop at lights or junctions the speedo drops to 20 mph and stays there even though i am stationary ?

Both of these faults occurred a different times first the tacho which i could live with, but the speedo fault makes it a bit dicey with all the speed cameras about.

So far i have removed the clocks to check the circuit board, resoldering a couple of dry joints i found has made no difference. There is no vehicle speed sensor on this car under the glove box. I thought these 2 clocks take their original signal from different sensors so it would be odd to have 2 iffy sensors at the same time. The car is otherwise running fine. I have read somewhere (but cant find the post again) that removing and then refitting the shunt fuse can somehow recalibrate the clocks, as the symptoms seem to be that they have lost their starting point. Does anybody know if this is correct, and if so what is the correct procedure for doing this. Failing this are their any other possible causes.

Many thanks
