I need some advice from the forum. I am planning on changing my car in the next few months (04 plate Mazda 6). Approaching 60k mark, current valuation according to Parkers is thus about 4- 4.5k for trade in.
But just the other week i foolishly scraped my passenger side wheel arch....arghghh.
Question is when it comes to the trade-in is it best to bite the bullet and get it fixed myself before hand (been quoted about £300) or do I not bother and just hold my hands up when it comes to it "yeah its got a scrape in it" and just let them knock it down accordingly? Opinions much appreciated.

How big is the damage? Might someone like Dentmasters not be able to fix it for a lot less?

I have not tried dent master. Halfords do an "in house" repair (in the car parks of their store) and they quoted me £220, which isn't much less than what the garages quoted. Its a slight dent and scratch you see.

Halfords do not do it in house - they call someone similar to Dentmaster.

Is it just paint and a tiny bit of filler or is any metal distorted? Some subtle colour of metallic no doubt?
Unless you know the body shop I would take advice and get a couple of other quotes, then get it done. You don't want to be standing next to some car trader shaking his head and sucking his teeth do you?

I would have thought a dealer could get it fixed for considerably less than and average punter. Although they would deny this when they suck air in through their teeth when they see it!!

So you pay Halfords, and Dentmaster.
I've heard that if you get a quote from one of these 'chips away' type places, and then approach the guy that actually does the work directly, the cost can be much less.
However, someone else buys it, and we get another thread like Tron's 'I've been had'.

My point is Halfords have nobody to do the work themselves - they call in someone else who operate like DentMaster. I do not know who you pay but probably Halfords and so they take a cut. Therefore go direct to the company doing the repairs.

In my experence, I would leave it to the dealer - some will just throw your old motor to the wolves in the shape of a non-franchised dealer mate ot the local auction house and some minimal damage is expected on a car a few years old. If the dealer is to keep it then I would hope they would "charge" you less than you having to pay retail for a repair.

Yes - the dealer is often quite keen to do the bodywork if they have their own bodyshop. Ask them how much you'd get for the Mazda with / without the repair and compare the difference with the quote.
