I got my first ever new car 3 and a half years ago. I was cleaning it today and for no reason I can fathom out the thought entered my head that it is a bit barmy referring to it as my"new" car (which I do --all the time) 'cos it ain't. Any longer. Have the neighbours been sniggering behind my back?
I just stood there and went a bit blank. In fact I went in and had a sit down. The damn car looks different now. Scruffy. Out of date. If I find a spiders web in the corner of the roof that will be the end. Next step use it as a chicken shed. Really stupid---I used to buy cars older than this.
Damn. This is a real bummer.I think I need counselling. Or cancelling.

i think my new cars are not new anymore after about 6 months. i normally change them every 2 1/2 yrs when i get really bored of them

Sorry to disillusion you but as the motor trade sees it, a new car ceases to be new the minute you drive it off the garage forecourt having handed over your money.
For your own peace of mind and sanity, you had best stop thinking of this 3 and a half year old car as new right away, or every tiny scratch or fault will do your head in and will indeed require urgent therapy.
Give it a good wash and polish and it will look as good as new and to hell with what the debt-ridden neighbours think.

The second you first turn the key it's no different to the nearly new example on the dealers forecourt with 500 miles on the clock for £4k less.

Not half as daft if he'd bought the 500 mile tdci that some clot had run half a tank of petrol through 3 weeks before, and was in fact the demonstrator that every tom dick and harry thrashed mercilessly from stone cold every day.
I wouldn't have dreamed of buying new meself until the common rail problems started to show.
I understand the savings to be made, but its not so clear cut any more as cars have got so complicated, and expensive to repair with it.

When is a new car no longer a new car?
Every time someone buys & owns a different car it's a new car to them whatever price they paid for it. It stops becoming a new car once the novelty value has worn off.

It never was new. It was probably sitting in a garage or manufacture's compond for weeks before you bought it. It had probably been driven.
Unless you were the first person to break the seal on the packing case and pull out all the bubble wrap, then it was shop-soiled.

I think it's an interesting question and the way it hit the OP hard (I realise he was writing tonque in cheek) does indicate why many people in the UK are obsessed with having a "new"car, such that new car sales are still at high levels and used car prices are mercilessly destroyed to an extent that doesn't seem to happen anywhere else.
My own view it that it's new until the registration identifier changes, so you get 6mths max!

100k - 150k they are in their prime.
150k - 200k getting on a bit but still able bodied
What are they? - Mondeo TDCIs

I think it's all about perception - the achievement of earning a new car and the sacrifices you have to make to afford it.
I bought one of the first Philips widescreen tellies back in 1994 which I still think of as new despite it being relegated to the bedroom when I bought the new "new" telly. It was my pride and joy, I wasn't long out of uni, I had just bought a London flat, still had college loans and I had to burn the candle at both ends to pay for it.
Actually, I can't believe it's 14 years old, that's quite shocking.

Giving mine (14 months old) a good wax and seal the other day. Found a couple of stone chips (shock, horror) and suddenly realised the interior was full of accumulated junk courtesy of the kids.
Suddenly didn't feel 'new' anymore. Once the rain stops, I'm out with the Gliptone and hoover. (My wife thinks I need to get a life) :)

If your lucky and have no kids / dogs the new car smell should last a year. Then you should sell the thing and get another one. No matter what the tight wads say there is nothing to beat driving off in a brand new car. And remember guys you cant take it with you, why leave it to the missus, she'll only go and blow the lot on a new Alfa Spider the minute your in the ground.

Except it is not better if you want a new car. It may have been better when it was new, but now it is soiled, scuffed and worn it is the same as the new diesel. Hence the same asking price.

I dont know about you but I don't buy soiled and scuffed used cars - I seek out examples which are immaculate. It's really not that difficult, you just need to be picky.

IMHO it's until you sell it. If you purchased it from new then it was, and will always be a new car. When I get a new car I will keep it for many years because to me it will always be a new car.
There's no way your car should look scruffy after just a few years. My car was 3.5 years old when I got it and is almost 9 years old now, but it still looks immaculate! After a bit of polish and wax etc. it easily looks shinier than a brand new car.

So it's not possible to own a new car.
Although if you only pay 75% of the list price then your car won't loose much value anyway. With some cars you can quite easily get 20+% discount on a new car, particularly from some of the places recommended by HJ.

But this only tends to be the case on mass-market appliance-style cars where the epic depreciation will cancel out your savings anyway.

So you really think that once you've driven it round the block some mug is going to offer you 75% of list price?
No! They'll offer you 75% of what you paid for it. So virtually 50% depreciation on list price before it's left the forecourt. Makes it pretty sickening when you're paying 40% tax on the relevant percentage of list price, if it's a company car, doesn't it.
