Saw some friends over the weekend and immediately noticed his new (second hand) van had my initials on his number plate. That'd be nice for my car I thought.
I'm sure he'd give it to me for nothing so long as I covered any costs for him (and bought him alcohol) but I have no idea what those costs would be.
Can anyone advise on the costs involved? Also, is it lots of hassle for us (changing insurance, tax disc etc.)?
Thanks in advance.

£80 for transfer payable to DVLA ... new insurance for your car with the "private " reg number on the policy .. fill in a form called V317 from local DVLA office then new plates for both vehicles .. oh and your mate will need to change his insurance over to ... they may want to inspect the cars at the local DVLA (unlikely but they can) all in all takes about 7 to 14 days .. good luck !!

I assume his plate is for the same age or older vehicle as yours? e.g. his is a 2006 '56' plate and yours is also '56', '07' or '57'?

YUP very good point you are not allowed to make a car look newer than what it is ... you can make it look older though
EG 2005 car cannot go onto a 2007 plate

No worries there. I recalled this rule from way back - it would be a V going on a 53.
So the only cost is £80? And that covers getting a new number plate for him (I don't mean a physical pair plates)?
I am worried about the hassle for him. What about a new tax disc?

£80.00, is now done there and then in the LVLO office so you can drive off on your new plates.
My insurance have never charged me, set of plates should cost you threepence if you go down the "show plates" road (see other recent thread) LVLO will issue you a new tax disc on the spot and ask you to send the other in (for some bizzare reason) I forgot and still have it !

Thanks Pug (and all).
So other than him telling his insurers to issue a new Ins Cert, it'll be no hassle for him if I take his docs and mine to the Post Office then get the new plates made up.
Now I need to make him an offer...

Ah, DVLA office. Just checked, nearest is Chelmsford which isn't too far from me.
