99 1.2 16v dodgy exhaust or something else - Tistin
The exhaust on my 1999 1.2 16v punto sounds dreadful. It is a new bog standard one but has a very deep boy racer sound. It passed its mot okay and I have not noticed any leaks so I am at a lose to why its sounds like it does. I spoke to the firm that fitted it and they said its needs time to carbon up as it is a bit hollow(what ever that means)and the exhaust is not faulty in any way. Am I being spun a yarn by the exhaust company or is there perhaps another reason for this problem? cheers..

Had a similar problem with a VW Polo Exhaust a few years ago, after I complained a few times(yet again I was told about taking time to carbon up) the exhaust company swapped it for another brand FOC. All was well after that.

It's not "carboning-up";when mufflers are made, the filling-usually basalt wool-is placed in the mufflers in plastic bags-to protect the workers and hold the shape during assembly-when the engine is run the bags melt-sounds like some firm used too thick a bag.

That doesn't sound very enviromentally friendly. I've never noticed a burning plastic smell from a new exhaust, other smells yes.

By the time you buy them no-but where they're first built and started, they are noisier and there is a plastic smell but the bags are very thin!
