You have taken the hub nut off...?

Slacken the handbrake cables (adjuster under car beneath lever) and then release auto adjuster ratchets in the drums. These are accessible through a wheel bolt hole if you revolve the hub - the toothed segment pushes downwards to release the shoes. If in doubt, see manual.
Do not use force on these brakes - there will be a big wear lip on the drum and damage will result if you don't retract the shoes first. The bearing is an easy sliding fit on the stub axle.
Don't forget to use a new hub nut, torqued and staked, followed by a new closure plate.

trying to release the auto adjuster completly slipped my mind will try that and see what happens . thanks for the info, much appreciated
