Best I've done is a 4 day test with a VW Passat in 2002. This was arranged via the firm's fleet people and is a great way to try out a car.

I got a whole weekend from Citroen, Saab, Toyota and Honda - and a full tank of fuel. 10 minutes from Vauxhall, 10 minutes from Ford, 15 minutes from Audi not even offered one from VW.
Guess what - I don't own a VW, Vauxhall or Ford!

the dodge dealer i went to see for a test drive got miffed with me because i went out of sight of the dealership LOL

We get them for a few days from the leasing companies - Longest was a 2.0 TDI Mondeo about 4 1/2 years ago that I had for two weeks, Did around 1000 miles in it!
|
Never too far, but I did once cut one short - that big Peugeot barge from a few years back (607?) Driving it made me feel car sick - something I never experience as a passenger.
|
Subaru dealer yesterday chucked us the keys, got us to sign a form and said see you in half hour or so, go where you like - made it much easier to relax in the car and we felt it was enough to make our decision.
|
Why are you buying from a dealer on your budget? 30% of the price is to pay the dealer!

In my company car days back in 2002 I tried out two VWs and a Volvo on business trips from the Midlands to the southeast. I liked the VWs - especially the Passat - less and less as I got to know them; the Volvo got better and better, which is why I ordered one, in the same colour as the demo car.
Even longer ago - 1995, I think - my local Saab dealer gave me a 900 for a whole weekend, and we took it to the south coast and back. I liked that too, and ordered one, followed by a 9-3. We buy cars to spend long periods inside them, so a ten-minute test drive (with the salesman driving half the time) is never going to be enough. That's one reason we won't be buying a Mazda 5.

Did 1000 miles in a Ford Mondeo Mk II several years ago.
Before purchasing my own car I hired one for a week! OK, so it cost me £250 to hire but I could go where I liked when I liked and no salesman sitting in the passenger seat. Cheaper than shelling-out several thousand pounds for a car which, so it could possibly turn out, I didn't like.
Would probably to the same thing again when I buy my next car.
|
Did a three day 250 mile test drive in a Kia Cee'd. That has led to a year long test drive that I'm just about half way through havng done 7800 miles.
Do I win the prize?!

This must be close to a record
An Australian man who took a new car on 6,200 kilometers (3,850 miles) test drive had been arrested, according to media reports Friday.
Tam Thai Luu, 30, convinced a car dealer in the southeastern city of Melbourne that he was a genuine buyer, and then took off the Honda Accord sedan before the salesman could get in the passenger seat.

>>6,200 kilometers (3,850 miles)
Pah. Amateur.

That doesn't sound like a test drive, it sounds more like theft. He got arrested, and you don't get arrested for test drives. He also didn't pay for petrol so he doesn't sound like a normal test driver.
|
He must have bought some petrol - he went further than a tankful would manage!

He did fill up with fuel at least once, but they setup a road block because he didn't pay for it.
|
I give in! It wasn't a test drive - it was theft!
