Friend has a 1995 Scorpio estate with the Cosworth engine. Just failed the mot with some welding issues. There is also a noise that may or may not be a wheel bearing. He wants rid of it - any money would be a bonus.
It had a cam chain failure about 10k miles ago, and as a result required most of a new engine. With this new engine in mind, is it worth anything to anyone (on here or not) and how should he shift it?
He doesn't really have the cash to do the work - apparently the welding is close to the fuel lines, so lots of labour costs for relatively little actual welding.
He's also just had to lay out £1200 for repairs to their other car!
Any thoughts from the oracles of wisdom please?
Thanks

See Classifieds on this site. There is a one owner, full service history Audi with 144K miles and a year's MOT bidding at £120 with no reserve, on E Bay at the moment. That doesn't make the Scorpio look too good for a non MOT'd fuel guzzler really.

I used to own a scorpio many moons ago. Nice big hefty cars, Where abouts is he and what sort of money would he be looking for? Ebay is usually a good place if he can be bothered to deal with all the scumbags that can potentially appear from nowhere. I would be interested personally

Or try one of the Granada / Scorpio owners clubs

Armitage - £127 it may be now, but I watched a near identical car same age/mileage, but MOT and tax to end Feb, and smashed front indicator, plus scarring to bumper, go for £425 on Sun pm! I'm anticipating it'll fetch north of £600.
Have a look on Ebay to see what these car go for in real life, and then decide. My advice would be to sell it on Ebay as it is, and put that money plus any more towards a Mondeo estate.

Indeed ONB - I wish you well - the car seems to be a proper gem/bargain.Anyone who gets a year's use out of it around £500 will be very happy indeed

The car is in Sheffield. I don't really think he's got a price in mind for the car - anything would be a bonus. If people seem to think that it might be worth around the £500 mark on ebay as is, then I guess something around that might be in order. He's never going to get back what he's spent on buying/running/repairing it, so I think he'd be up for an offer.
I can have a word and see the way the land lies, if you like. He has a new job abroad, and so the car will need to go at some point - it's simply a case of whether it's better to sell as is now or not.
Thanks

Sounds like a money pit: failed MOT with rust...
Been there... never again... you could spend £5k and still have a heap of tat...

Everything about this car screams pile of junk - avoid, apart from that delectable 204 bhp Cosworth V6 which is bound to twang the heart strings of a petrolhead somewhere...
The engine also has some value on the secondhand market as a replacement unit, or for a conversion into a Sierra or Capri. Particularly given its recent rebuild status.
I'd ebay the car, personally, making a big note that it's a recently rebuilt Cossie V6. They're not so easy to come by in good shape any more.
Cheers

I agree that Ebay is the place for it - the engine has rarity/convenience value, and the car that's around it is worth another £50 weighed in. Sheffield is easy enough to get to, so it'll sell.

I too think it's the Cosworth engine that will make people think I want it (not me!). The car itself could be a money pit. In fact if it was cheap and easy to get an MOT the OP's friend would have done it.
But as a reconditioned/rebuil engine it might be worth an amount for the engine alone.

The saloon car record for the Nurburgring was held for years by a Cosworth-engined Capri.

"saloon car record for the Nurburgring was held for years by a Cosworth-engined Capri"
Being a pedant, the Capri was a coupe and not a saloon wasn't it? :-)

It was a full four-seater even if it did have a fast-back!!

Tell him to stick it on ebay advertised as a cosworth engine still in in a car and that the buyer takes the whole lot away. Any car part on ebay with a cosworth prefix goes for a massive premium. It will find a number of willing buyers.
