Scratched windscreen - Fixable? - ShineOnYouCrazyDiamond

Hi. On my T reg Vectra I have scratches on the windscreen where it looks like the wiper blades have done it somehow. Theres are not small scratches. They look like smears but there not.
1st, what can cause this and second is there anyway I can get these scratches out?

It is possible to polish out the matt effect that the wiper arms have caused by scraping repeatedly across the screen but it's not possible to replace the missing glass ,so you are left with some horrible distortion.The best way to get rid of the marks completely is to take a centerpunch place it within 1/2 inch of the edge of the screen centerish and hit it sharply with a hammer.The result is an MOT failing crack.Then call your insurance company and you can have a new screen fitted for usually a £50 excess .It would cost about that to polish out anyway.If you don't have windscreen cover you're in for about £200 I would guess.Don't forget to change the blades and arms if necessary.
