03 2.0 Diesel oil overfill. - goldpaf
Hi. I'm new to this forum. I recently purchased a 2002/2003 Vauxhall Vectra 2.2 DTi.
I foolishly overfilled the oil by around 3/4 inch on the dipstick, by getting a mis-read from not leaving it long enough to settle. The excess oil was in the car for about three weeks. I then started getting fairly thick exhaust smoke under heavy acceleration and drained the excess off.
I drained it three days ago now, however the smoke problem remains.
Am I likely to have damaged the engine with the overfiling?
I guess I've probably done about two-three hundred miles with the excess oil in.
Any suggestions please?

Pulled off a 2002 posting into its own post.

you are a lucky man if have seen these engines run on the excess oil in an engine and its scary, anyway to your original post, there will be excesive oil in the exhaust system and cat (although the cat should have burn it off already unless you only do short drives ) so it will take a while to burn off/out so it could do with an italian tune up and put it down to experiance

Hi Topbloke.
Thanks for the reply.
What do you mean by Italian tune up?
I only do short journeys, and the black smoke only seems to appear under heavy acceleration or just after the turbo 'dumps'.
Do you think the car will be ok or should I flog it quick??

Cheers.

Take it on a longish run and give it plenty of revs.

That'll be the problem then. Take it for a regular good blast. see the last paragraph beginning "After that..." in HJ's FAQ no.14.
