How do you stop a car from misting up? - biggrin
Does anyone out there have a solution, on how to stop a car from misting up.
I have a Astra Estate, and the side windows are constantly misted up. I was told to run the air conditioning along with the heater as it would act like a dehumidifier, but that didn't work.
There is no sign of any dampness in the carpets or upholstery so I am at a loss as to why it is always misted. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you. Biggrin

Hi,

The same thing happened to my Vauxahll Astra. It was cured by replacing the pollen filter.

Best regards,

Astrabob.

Yes, start with the pollen filter. They are rarely changed at service time and once blocked they are usually the cause of this problem. Running the air conditioning with the heater all year round should dehumidify the air and reduce misting up in the winter.

Keep the windows down for the first mile or so while warming up. Always works for me ;)

The solution is likely to be the same - change the pollen filter. If you change the pollen filter and still get misting up, then water is leaking into the inside of the car either from the heater or through a window or door seal.

Many cars get damp around this time of year.

If you can get an extension lead inside; leave a domestic dehumidifier in there for 24hrs [silica-gel type are best at low temps] - you'll be amazed at how much water it gets out.

Your problem may well have already been solved by the previous posts. I would also check your spare wheel well to see if water has gathered in there and the drain holes in the bottom of the doors to ensure that they are clear. I once had a car which must have been caught in a rainstorm with the boot open prior to my taking it over, the spare wheel well had collected some water and for a few weeks the windows constantly misted up. Once I had spotted the problem and dried it out it was subsequently fine. Look for trapped water.

wiping the inside of the windows with neat fairy liquid and letting it dry was a great help in days before a/c

The reason why some garages don't bother changing the filter on these is that it's not a '5 minute' job and have trouble justifying to the customer why it took 15+ mins to change one and that it will be an extortionate labour charge for the priveledge.

Here's a how2, if you want to tackle it yourself. It's not too difficult, just time consuming. Careful not too tear the new filter (as I once did) when fitting it.

Changing the pollen filter is a scheduled task, covered by the "standard" service time for an Astra. Whether a particular dealer's employees take more or less time should be irrelevant.

Charging the standard service time, at whatever hourly rate, plus the cost of the pollen filter but not replacing the filter is criminal fraud. An otherwise respected dealer did exactly that on my Astra.

In an ideal world yes, but the pollen filter on an Astra G is not that easy to change, and many unscrupulous garages would charge you for a new one without actually fitting it, and most people wouldn't realise that they hadn't......

Pollen filter, (or labour) was never charged for on my Dad's 51 reg Astra during routine servicing. When I changed it myself at 5 yrs old, I could see that it had never been changed before - yuk.

Thanks everyone for you sound advice, it has all been taken on-board.
I have checked the obvious for water etc, but I had not thought about the pollen filter, which many of you have pointed to as the likely cause.
When I have changed it, I'll let you know if it worked.

Regards to all and many thanks.

I tell you one thing, in addition to those silicone cosmetic sprays designed for slicking dashboards, I have found that liquid/oil based air fresheners seem to deposit the oil on the windows which attracts condensation droplets.
