A31 accident - deepwith
At lunchtime today there was a minor scrape between two cars on the A31 westbound immediately after the Ringwood exit. Sadly a lorry then crashed into the cars and a minor incident became major, involving at least one more car, with firemen needing cutting gear, the air ambulance and at least two other ambulances.
What makes me despair of the human race is that cars directed off the road were stopping on the slip road, people getting out ...... wait for it ..... to take pictures on their phones.

'to take pictures on their phones'.............

Yes, though imo the real despair should be reserved for the news media (BBC, ITV, DT, Times, Sky etc.) who actively encourage this practise by requesting that people take such images and then if 'good' enough will pay for them. It's a free market and if money and fame is on offer why shouldn't people stop? (a purely rhetorical question btw ;) )

Saw the same on the M1 3 weeks ago.

We stopped to help and I ended up directing traffic until the police arrived and took over.

Amazed how just how many people slowed down to not only look but to take pictures as well.

I was involved in an accident on the M3 when I was hit hard from behind & struck cars to the side of me. it closed the motorway for a while & when traffic got moving motorist were sticking their finger up at us whilst we where sat waiting for an ambulance & others were blasting there horns & shouting abuse. Some ended up skidding on spilt diesel & were lucky they didn't have a big prang. I just hope that those sticking there fingers up & hurling abuse are themselves in a huge prang one day!. Its one of those little things I shall never forget.

That reminds me of a H E Bateman cartoon.....I'll dig it out when I get back home.

We live a completely dysfunctional and ruined society.

Steady on PU. It may be a bit dysfunctional and a bit ruined - what society ever wasn't? - and it may even be these things a bit more badly than it was when you were young (let alone those of us who have actually almost reached middle age), but 'completely'? Come come my dear fellow.

If you carry on like that you may depress some of the more impressionable individuals who come here, with incalculable consequences. You should imply that this old Etonian chap round the corner, inspired by (fingers crossed) the triumphant Obama/Clinton ticket, may just save the situation before it's too late. No point in making everyone miserable while they wait for the carp to hit the fan.

At least you're proof positive of some "values". I withdraw my blanket allegation.

Although I maintain that a mobile phone cum camera was the dumbest invention ever. I suppose that these ghouls are at home now busily uploading there digitised exclusives on to Youface for their 15 minutes of fame.

On the plus side came across three sheep on a busy road today rather than waiting for phone poised for the eventual calamity I called at a nearby farmhouse and the farmer was doing something rural to a lamb and despite our language gap he busied himself into a lovely (if sheddy) Series 3 Land Rover to go and herd them (or whatever).

injection doc, I can see where the frustration comes from and mostly agree. But wishing someone buried under and artic is very over the top. You are basically wishing them dead then.

We got hit by an arctic and it severely crushed the hire car. And it shut down roads out of Milan Malpensa for hours due to it being multiple pile up etc. I must have a thick skull because the roof (which caved in due to the car being shorter) ripped the back of my head open to the bone but nothing worse. Now if I'd been taller then I would be dead because the seat would have been further back. Thankfully only about 5' 10".

Yours was clearly a very nasty experience rtj though from what I understand IJ's was equally serious and that he will always suffer the effects, hence some bitterness is perhaps forgivable.

cheddar I agree with you and IJ that the experience he had was terrible - to be in an accident and then suffer abuse by other drivers.

I personally am lucky that no serious personal damage happened (have the CT scan of my brain) and have no memory of just before the crash and none until I was sat in the ambulance and all paramedics, fire brigade, police, etc. attending. I have no idea who actually got me out of the car - other drivers or emergency services. My wife thought I was dead being unconsious and blood pouring out of my head.

Another reason why this country is more messed up than others. We had two (and at one point) three police officers stay with us whilst at the A&E for hours. Would that happen here?

We were told by the interpreter that they found for us (member of staff), who also stayed with us, nobody else apart from us injured.... although maybe that wasn't the case after all?

they eventually gave us a lift to where the car was now being stored to collect the remains of the luggage.

I was semi involved in this accident, I'd had a wonderful care free journey from Weybridge to Ferndown, and was surprised how little traffic there had been.
Suddenly everything came to a halt, and at least 6 police cars and a couple of ambulances arrived, (hope there were no fatalities or serious injuries) and we were lucky there was a convenient slip road which allowed fairly constant free flowing traffic.
What I was surprised at was at 1pm when I was in the jam, it looked pretty awful, including a mini facing the wrong way -but at 3.30 on the return journey, there was not a whiff, apart from a few cones and a buckled central reservation, that there had ever been a major incident less than 3 hours earlier - very impressive.
Today a lorry turns over on the M1 AT 02.00 and they don't reckon it will re open till at least noon !!

Trapped lady airlifted to Southampton General with head injuries, others walking wounded. Amazing considering how it looked.
