94 1275 Mini, Cutting out intermittently - scottg17
Hi... my mate has a mini 1275 1994 model with an intermittent cutting out issue...

It will be fine for say 10-15 miles and lets say you come up to a roundabout and need to slow down... you put the clutch in and the engine dies... sometimes when you turn the key it will fire no issues...

BUT.. today and once a few weeks ago this was a diffferent story when we went to crank it over there was minimal power in the battery... disallowing the starter moter to turn... after a bump start and driving 500 yds to a carpark and leaving the car for 30 mins and going into shops...

it started fine...

We are unsure what this could be.... poss alternator/battery... faulty earth??

has anyone got any ieas?/

thanks!

Cutting out intermittently - piston power
A good start would be to clean and make a good earth possibly replace with a new cable's, check connections on starter /alternator clean up with emery cloth etc,
Your cutting out maybe seperrate issue maybe fuel blockage, low tick over, vacuum leak, etc,
Again basic checks fit a new inline fuel filter check all hoses to carb. good luck.

If the battery was indeed flat when it cut-out; then I'd suspect a charging fault.

If the alternator warning light is behaving normally; then it could be something as simple as a slack fanbelt.

Check the alt W/L function; the temperature of the alternator pulley after running and see if you can force the alternator fan round with your thumb.

Reading the op description again suggests its not a battery fault (lack of power that recovers after 50 yards driving and 30 minutes standing time), but gives the impression of lack of power at attempted starting.

So, when it cuts out at junction? Does it run ok until accelerator released?
Does it misfire, or pull poorly before the junction/normal driving? Does it start from cold ok every day?

Basic checks are good earths, especially engine to body (known weakspot on these), power cable to starter motor and even starter motor itself.

More info please too. but hth
