Topic,
Give us a `mental picture` of you, as you are when you post (with the necessary car link)

Me?, Having retired, I tend to loll on my back on the brown leather sofa at home, posting using a Compaq F500 laptop.
I`m late 50`s, 6`2" and 11stone, threw 100 ties out when I retired and have reverted to wearing blue jeans.
I`m interested in Military history and just got back from a trip to see the Normandy beaches and the Bayeur tapestry.

The Punto multijet van did this trip, its very low profile, which is my preference in vehicles.

regards

Well i'm not yet retired and the amount of tax Gord and his cohorts take it could be some time yet.

I still drive a car transporter and have been driving trucks mainly transporters for 32 years so far, must get a proper job one day.

Glad there's no webcam connection here, as very often Georgeous is sitting beside me doing her craftwork etc and i'm trying in vain to look intelligent and suffice to say you wouldn't want the webcam pointing at me!

I'm still trying to get the hang of this computer thingy (have you ever tried to teach a cow to fire a bren?), which is a sony vaio.

I'm thoroughly bone idle when not at work, do a lot of reading etc real energetic stuff.

Cars here comes some abuse now....96 merc E320 coupe(124) 69k from new
and New toyota hilux 3.0 td auto.

In mid 20's, self employed in IT supoort. Drive a 97R Fiesta 1.3 Ghia.

Also ride a double decker bus, trains and got knows what other form of transport! I tend to avoid skycars though or anything that goes to the moon.

i did the pubs for 30 years non stop every night but these last few years ive given up with the lewd crowds and the expensive prices so tend to drink at home more, apart from journeys up to my local working mens club

i go on this site because its got an interest in motoring and its something i know about as i sell cars for a living,it gets harder weekly though to make the sales, too many at it see
i have no real interest in what i drive as its no fun anymore on our crowded roads,i drive a primera auto because i like autos and have 3 transits because im half irish and have a bit of snipin me blood

Well you all know what I do. Well its a high octane, high stress job, which in 18 months time I will be extracting myself from at the grand old age of 49. Been coming to the BR for quite a few years. Use it to chill.

Looking at rationalising my fleet.

(very) Soon to be an ex. BMW driver (!) after over 25 years behind the blue propeller.
Also own a a Defender (LHD Spanish origin) which may be disposed of in the next few months.
SWMBO runs a newish Golf GTi.
Sold a 3 series touring project car last year after bringing it back to life
Own two motorbikes, a 2004 BMW R1200GS and a Honda CB650 Nighthawk

5'11" all my own hair and teeth.

Post either from my excellent and cheap Gateway laptop which may be anywhere in the house or my superb Mesh desktop which is my upstairs office/den thing. Never from work, simply because I don't get the time... (37 hours this week in four days plus a bit of Blackberrying on Friday which was nominally a day off)

Ah, the cares of State!

Lounging on my solid ivory throne, attended by scented and bejewelled concubines and catamites, with an army of literate eunuchs composing all my official communiques including this one and despatching them by various means - courier, King's Messenger, and all these other communication methods whatever they may be -, it must be impossible for observers to judge my size or appearance beneath and behind the jewel-encrusted and gold-embroidered raiment and heavy makeup, while I myself have forgotten what I look like being bent under the cares of the world. Even if I had a webcam all you would see would be the sticky fingermarks on the lens.

Oh happy many who are not me! Even though I have instructed my eunuchs to place an order for a customised gold-plated coach and thirty-six from the Kingdom of Hesse, and look forward to progressing at a wild gallop therein through the narrower streets of the capital.

So now you know for sure, CP.

While I am here, I would add that (apart from the excellent Herr Flick, whom I hereby award the Second Class Cross for Relative Valour and the honorary rank of Brigadier) and myself, all the posts here seem to be fanciful or even boastful. What good purpose is served by claims to be free from dental prostheses and still in possession of a few straggling hairs?

Interesting post, to which I will post a probably uninteresting reply...

35 but in denial about it, voracious reader, hate chavs, wags and celebrity culture, champagne socialist, currently 'between jobs' and utterly bored. Driving a Mazda6 that is about to be taken off me and am hugely looking forward to buying a banger for a bit.. no honestly I am!

What else? Single, drink too much, love cars, travel, music, films and cooking.... addicted to Facebook (yes I know...) and dangerous brunettes (female).

You all sound an interesting bunch by the way!

Oh blimey... this is like internet dating (so I've heard!)

You all know me, I grew up here ;-)

Currently driving a Golf 1.9tdi Sport, wanted the Gti but with my milage it was a silly idea and the gttdi was too expensive. There's nothing wrong with the golf - he's like the man the loves you unconditionally and brings you flowers every Friday... he just doesn't get you excited very often. Used to drive a Polo which got into all sorts of scrapes - they do say all the girls love a pink fluffy dice.

Oh, I forgot - I post from my new flat (been in two weeks on my own!) on my new sofa that was paid for entirely by me. Now that's a great feeling, but also scarily grown up.

(This place is crying out for a facebook group by the way...)

Well I normally post from my desktop which sits in my living room or occasionally from the computer in work if I take my lunch at the desk. If posting from home, I usually have music or the football on the tv / radio. Occasionally I will stand and do my ironing whilst checking the BR for anything of interest!

I am just turned 38, have spent 13 years as a retail manager, having to screw the staff every which way to make sure that the company reaches its profit targets. However, I changed job this year and now run eleven (soon to be 12) charity shops for a local charity which is very rewarding as all the profits made go to the charity and that is so much better to see than going to a chairman's pay increase! I now look back on food reatiling and just wonder how I put up with it!

Currently drive a Skoda and Seat, both purchases of which were influenced by threads on here!

Like to look on the BR as my local pub, occasionally I will have a glass of wine (like just now) and discuss motoring subjects with my pals, knowing that I don't need to agree or disagree, can go to the loo half way through a conversation, and if I get bored or get a better offer, no one will take offence!

I was talking to a support guy on the phone earlier today, for a VOIP set up.

That gave me the idea for this thread. From his accent and the time, i `knew` he was on the Pacific US coast. The timbre of his voice and name also gave clues.

Regarding our communications on this HJ forum. We have discussed cars at great length and attitudes and comments which give a mental image of the poster.

I`m postulating that the mind HAS to form a mental image, even if incorrect.

As such, I thought it may be interesting to form a `snapshot` expressed in writing of us posting rather as though a camera was right now taking a shot from the corner of your room.

Regards

43 years old, employed by a Chrysler dealer and drive an '81 New Yorker with the 318 under the hood. Billy - 5'7" slightly over-wieght (cuddly as the "chicks" call it) still got me good looks, and am still a kid at heart with a wicked sense of humour ( if i posted all the funny comments i think up in reply to some posts in here, most of you would say i should have been on the stage - preferably the first one outa town ;-( )
however i do try very hard to be sensible, but after cheating death several times i realise life is to short to be worried about bills, red tape, or boring folk!

Don't drive a car anymore cos of all the cheatin- tax grabbin schemes that is now plagueing the ownership of such pleasures.

59, male, 5' 7" (I'm glad we're all still using feet and inches - if Jesus Christ wanted us to go metric he'd have had 10 apostles). Still working - training manager for a Largish firm of accountants, so as an accountant as well as a trainer I'm boring on (at least) two counts.

Also church organist and choirmaster at Sonning-on Thames (it would be quite fun if more people told us in which area they live). 4 grown-up children - two of each.

Posting from upstairs 'office' (i.e. smallest bedroom) - usually quite late in the evening to relax and get away from the TV, to which SWMBO is much more addicted than I am.

Golf Mark V 2.0 TDI estate and SWMBO has a Mini One - once again both of us have cars we enjoy. 'Respect' as in Oilrag's other thread, is due to people rather than cars, as others have rightly pointed out. But if one is interested in cars for enjoyment as well as transport, then it's well worth taking some trouble to find one that you really like. I don't care what other people think of it or what image it might project, although it's interesting that the new Golf estate has attracted more admiring comments than its predecessor, a Mercedes, ever did.

Treat the backroom as a virtual pub and usually vist for an hour or so nightly. Post from laptop in study bedroom while sipping a beer (currently on Pelforth Blonde after an Oct half term trip to France). Used to visit in my lunchbreak but work netnanny blocks the BR since early last year.

Passed test in 1977 and owned own car since 1982. Apart from two Minis early in my driving career I've favoured PSA products - currently drive a Xantia 110 Hdi Estate as station hack/backup with SWMBO's Berlingo as main family car.

have made an office in the garage, by nicking the middle bit.. (still room for my old car though).... which means i can sit in there to my hearts content whilst my better half watches things like 'Strictly' and similar.

She calls this site Dear John... so maybe i overdo it!

44 yrs old, 14 stone 35lbs, all my own hair and teeth, don't need 'bins' yet.

Got divorced 10 yrs ago and used my local pub as a second living room, which meant by sylph like figure changed somewhat dramatically for the worse and although it's improved slightly, not to the extent it should be.

Jag fanatic in case no ones noticed, treated myself to a divorce present 5.5 years ago and bought a low mileage main dealer S Type 3.0 SE and have still got it..... Met my second wife 3 yrs ago and persuaded her to buy one as well, albeit she insisted on diesel and estate. Want a 420G or Mk10 when i retire and have promised myself.

Sprog due in 7 weeks time, don't know what sex, wasn't allowed to know as SWMBO wants a surprise......so everything is now yellow. Thought that side of things wasn't going to happen with my age, (the advantage of trading in for something younger)... can't wait.

Male, 5' 11" and about 13.5st but reducing that currently with a rather enthuiastic gym routine. Blonde hair but already receding at an unfair rate. I graduated from Warwick University with an M.Eng in Manufacturing Engineering and Management, now working for Rolls-Royce in Operations Management and have been for just over a year now. Previous postings have included Barnoldswick (Lancs), Derby (of course), Bristol, Hucknall (Nottingham) and now I'm one month in to a six month placement in Indianapolis, Indiana, US of A.

I committed myself to Facebook because my girlfriend requested it, part time computer geek covering Macs and Windows Client/Server networks in equal proportions also paid my way through university driving Audis for a local dealer and working as a Sound Engineer for Warwick Arts Centre and Warwick Student Union. I post from my current laptop (MacBook Pro) currently from a bedroom in a rented flat in Indianapolis on the 24th floor. Hoping to buy a house with my lovely lady when I get back to the UK.

Currently driving an Audi TT 2.0T FSI which is the best car I've owned so far, previously an Audi A3 2.0TDI which would have equalled it had it been quieter - it was a great car in its own right though. Before that Golf IV TDI Auto, Xsara HDI and Rover 214s plus driving dad's cars. Out in the USA I'm now driving a Pontiac G6 2.4 which is plastic fantastic inside and can just about hit 26 US MPG. Replace a 2.7v6 Dodge Charger which is like a really un-aerodynamic Chrysler 300C that could do 18mpg tops in town. Nicer inside but driving something dimensionally bigger and heavier than an Audi A8 for one person seemed excessive. Gas here is currently $3.00 per gallon.

Mmm, that's contentious! Most people from Barlick associate themselves more with Yorkshire still, and regard the boundary changes of 1974 with disdain.

Despite originating a few miles down the road from Barlick (from somewhere that is incontestably Lancashire!), and currently living 5 minutes from the Sinfin site, I've never [directly] worked for Rolls-Royce.

------

I'm a, ahem, large framed bloke! In between doing sums, I post from a Toshiba laptop. SWMBO is next to me, feeding Number_Nipper as I type, while our Abyssinian cat is prowling round, reminding us that she needs feeding too.

As I'm sure no-one will be surprised to hear, I'm a mechanical engineer. I've had a variety of roles, but I'm currently working on the development of some sensitive instruments ** for a space mission.

** real instruments!! - a million miles away from the dashboard mounted gimmicks that people place far too much faith in!

Our cars are a 1995 MB E300D - it's a W124 shape estate which I bought last year with 125000 miles on it, and a 53 reg 1600 Astra which we have had since it was 6 months old. I tend to do all the maintenance on our cars, and for those of a few friends and family members.

I'm sitting in our den at home, with two annoying little boys who can't get on, fighting at my feet about a game. I must give them some attention. I also post from the office, when I get bored between paragraphs of valuation reports.

I'm 43, 5'7" and probably about two stone overweight, although I try to exercise by swimming once or twice a week and have started to cycle the four miles to the office on Fridays when I don't go out on inspections and if it doesn't rain. With SWMBO we have the two aforementioned boys (7 & 9) and a daughter aged three.

Like my profile says, I like changing cars, but I've come across Subaru and think I may stay with them for a while. er indoorshas a ubiquitous MPV (Hyundai Trajet) which is the most boring car I have ever driven, but it does what it says on the tin. It get the family around Manchester and down to MiL in the smoke, safely, without complications and without using too much fuel, although more than I would prefer.

Remarkably accurate - I tend only to wear the white coat in the clean-room though - along with fetching shower cap, double gloves taped to my sleeves and overshoes. In terms of appearance, somewhere half way between James May and Clarkson (not a pretty picture I grant you!).

So, I conform to stereotype fairly well - would I be right to think that you *don't* fit the stereotype of graphic designer types BBD? (or is Big Bad misleading?)

I'm 23, and I'm a full time University student in the final year of my degree. I spend my spare time (ie, time not at Uni, at work or with the GF) arguing on the internet about cars, playing PC games, and inhabiting the local students union with my friends. I can be found ignoring fashion and style and mostly wearing skate-shoes, a pair of Levi's and some sort of hoody. You'll find everything on my stereo from Linkin Park and Feeder to Fleetwood Mac and Mike and the Mechanics.

I drive a '51 plate BMW 530i Sport with a manual gearbox, in silver, with Black Leather, Xenons and 18 inch wheels which I've had for over a year now. I absolutely love it, although it's the complete opposite of the correct car for my needs. Plan to hang onto it until I've graduated Uni, got myself sorted, then I'll upgrade to something new - I like the look of the 3 Series Coupe, if I've got rid of my E39 M5 obsession by then.

I also have no idea how my girlfriend puts up with my car obsession. She couldnt care less what a car looks like provided it goes from A to B.

Mostly post from my desktop PC, which I self build and upgrade far too often. That or my Laptop I use for Uni (Dell D620) or my phone

In terms of appearance I would say I?m a bit like Frasier?s father (in the sitcom Frasier). I still have much of my own hair and I still have my own tooth :o)

Although I had previously driven lorries in the army my driving life proper didn?t start until 1955. I had a succession of Fords until the 1970s when I switched to Volvo. At the moment I drive a 1989 Volvo 740 which I have owned since new. If I am spared and well I intend to keep driving until my current license expires (2009)

Work as a an accountant in Stockport, though don't were a suit or tie, having outgrown all my shirt collars over the 4 years since my separation. Sprogs visit regularly, though it seems mostly to use the computer!
Currently driving a 2000 'X' Focus Ghia, as described in my profile, though a nice lady from Peugeot thinks I should test drive the 308.

Think of a room, about 12 foot square, in a castle in the Highlands. The walls are lined with bookcases, full of learned tomes. There are a couple of desks in the room. There are stacks of papers and books and other assorted bits of junk (not to mention cobwebs) everywhere - the place has obviously never been tidied in years. At one of the desks sits a middle-aged, bearded man (about 6'1", 11 stone) wearing an old tweed jacket (and, because of the cost of heating castles, sometimes an outdoor coat as well). He is typing away on a Toshiba laptop. He has never looked at Facebook, and is very unlikely ever to do so in the future. Outside, on the driveway, sits a Berlingo.

That, if you change one or two of the details, roughly describes your correspondent.

6' 2" and heading (rapidly) towards middle age with a couple of spare tyres (motoring link). Used to do telephone exchanges for a living, currently testing software having been made redundant earlier this year after nearly 13 years in an electronics co. Doing my best to boost Scotland's flagging population by having 6 kids which explains why I drive a Previa. Run whatever's cheap as a daily driver (Rover 214 currently) but would really like an early '70s Granada (used to have a '74 ghia until it burst into flames one day whilst driving, SWMBO won't let me have another :( )

35 y.o. (blimey time flies once you start work!), 5'9" and 15 stone; think (a bit overweight) rugby player build..
Usually post from my work PC when I'm having a tea break. Work is project engineer for a small firm of consulting engineers (civil and structural), which is fairly dull but I do get a bit of job satisfaction from time to time. I don't post much from home because my g.f. (sorry, fiancee) monopolises the PC in the evenings.

Interests: cars, music, motorsport, military history, beer, and cars.. I've been interested in cars since before I could walk. I find I have a growing interest in older cars and classics, find the majority of modern cars characterless these days.
For economy reasons I currently drive a Saab 9-3 2.2 TiD hatchback with a tuning box fitted which perks it up a bit. Girlfriend (sorry, fiancee) drives an MX-5.
Would normally have got rid of the Saab before now (had it 3.5 years) but its been exceptionally reliable so keeping it for now. I may well run it into the ground (start using it as a builders van!)..
I've been thinking of buying something more interesting for some time, but I'm saving up for a wedding (!), and a deposit for another house (project), so it will have to wait...

I'm 23, 5"10' with blonde hair, slightly overweight for where I'd like to be, although I have started pounding the gym with my well-built boss and what a difference I'm starting to feel!

I'm single as I'm far too selfish to ever live with a partner and I value my own freedom too highly! I'm currently posting from my laptop on my black leather sofa with a music channel playing in the background, I live on my own so I don't need to worry about what anyone else wants on the TV! I'm still not dressed (although am wearing shorts and a T-shirt for those with a vivid imagination!) as I only got up an hour ago. Don't ya just love days off? :-)

I'm currently a manager within a call centre for a large energy firm where I try to maintain a full time working week at the same time as studying my full time degree in Business Management (why is it that I find the content of my degree in management totally irrelevant to my job in management?). It's a bit of a struggle, and as I'm in my final year I really am starting to get scared about how I will manage a dissertation at the same time. I think I might turn to drink.

Car wise I've had about 9 or 10 since I passed my test 6 years ago, currently on an MG TF 135 and a Mondeo Ghia X V6. I like to change them far too often and only the fact that I know I couldn't replace the TF easily has stopped my swapping it for a 530i Sport that I saw on Autotrader near my home, I'm determined to show some commitment by owning this car for at least 1 year, the Mondeo I'm not particularly bothered about, I'd swap it tommorow if something better came along, although for £2K that's unlikely. ;-)

Male, 32, 6ft 2, was a bit porky but gave up smoking 2 months ago and have become downright fat which coincided with tabloid horror stories about obesity being a greater cancer risk than smoking. I give up! :-)
Happily married with two kids (2 and a half, and 8 months). Usually found on the sofa with an Acer laptop or at work sneaking in posts if I need to take some time out. I am an avid petrolhead and have been since the age of two, after which I should explain that my current car fleet is through circumstance rather than desire, although the Scenic does have its charms. Get my thrills on a Kawasaki ZZR600 and until recently a ZX-7R. I'm the kind of person who would be more excited by the prospect of an ur-Quattro, whale tail Cossie or Caterham Superlight in the garage for weekends than having a BMW 3 series or Audi A4 to drive to work in, and who would climb over a mk4 Golf GTI to get to a Pug 306 GTI-6. The badge on a car genuinely means nothing to me - I buy on how it drives and what it does.
Work as a Pre Sales Manager for a large Japanese printer manufacturer which keeps my brain active-ish and surrounds me with products that satisfy my appreciation of both gadgetry and precision engineering. I have no engineering qualifications or knowledge, but I am the kind of anorak who gets excited about the kind of precision engineering that can pull a sheet of 60 gsm paper through a machine at 55 mph, run it through a 160°C, 80 psi heat and pressure fusing process, deliver it flat and undamaged the other side, and repeat the process three times a second.
Happy, but increasingly disillusioned with the UK and would relocate in a shot if it weren't for family ties (elderly parents-in-law who dote on their grandkids, who have never been out of the UK and wouldn't start now). Genuinely can't see myself growing old here though and lucky in that relocation through work would be possible if I really wanted it.
That's about it really. That be me.

Cheers
DP

Well, I'm (obviously) facing a computer screen associated with a PC assembled and tuned by my son-in-law, who has to do with much more important computers than these. To my right is a window with a view over the Tay including the railway bridge, to my left is a view through to a back room where one of two old cats, recently entrusted to me by Cats Protection, can be seen. Behind is a large bookcase accomodating some of the books with which the house is infested. I'm still 6' tall if I pull myself straight up. My teeth are my own in the sense of fully paid for rather than non-detachable, and some hair lingers at back and sides.

I am typing laboriously with one finger so for further details see my Profile! (Click on "Tomo")

I occasionally post @ work but try not to, otherwise I'm @ home on the sofa, on my pink laptop (long story!). I am 28, 5'7", try to exercise as much as possible & work as a marketing manager in retail. I drive an R reg Boxster 2.5 in black with mint condition bodywork, brand new hood (with glass window), 2003 MY facelift clear lights & full black leather interior. I'm quite paranoid & indecisive about cars & am always thinking about changing. Before the Porsche I had a Black mk 4 Golf GTi turbo which I had chipped & had great torque. (better mid-range than the Boxster probably).

My question is, who is HJ and what's his history? To me he is a legendary character, never getting caught up in arguements or bickering. I'd love to have some personal background on the big man himself!

I'm 21, 5'8 or so and about 10 stone. Drive a company car - Focus Titanium 2.0tdci (a year or so old now) - and do about 25-30k a year. At the moment as I'm nudging the annual mileage limit on the lease, I have a loan BMW 320d M sport for the last month of the lease year (I should get to the limit more often!). Much of my driving is between our two offices in Leeds & London, or commuting from home in York out to Leeds. I spend quite a bit of time on the road seeing clients as well.

I'm a director of a consultancy company which works with large (high street name) retailers to improve their internal business processes, with the eventual aim of making them more money.

Believe in a "work hard play hard" type lifestyle which typically sees me out until the small hours at least a couple of times a week then at work first thing trying to make some money to pay for all the fun! A healthy interest in cars, am currently on my 3rd car in 3 years since passing my test and get bored very quickly. Was painful to commit to a 3 year company car but thankfully I'm well supplied with demo/loan cars so don't get too bored.

Outside of work I coach a kids football team (I'm an FA level 1 qualified coach) and love to travel though don't get as much time to do that as I would like, what with work commitments. Other than that I do what most 21 year olds do and drink to excess!

Now that sounds interesting, so few places seem to focus on the processes that make their business tick, the company that I work for is reasonably good but I've worked for some that really aren't.

Even more impressed that you're in that position at 21, I'm watching my dad's consultancy business closely as it may offer a future avenue for me if I can make it happen, think it will be a few years yet though.

Probably the first long thread on here that I've read through every post. Me? 52, 6'1", 14.49 stone (working on it for beach holiday in January) , hair - salt and pepper, receding but this seems to have slowed down according to my family to our mutual surprise although when it gets to a certain point it's going to be styled by Gillette Fusion! I used to be a mad squash player and keen half and sometimes full marathon runner (Paula Radcliffe yesterday - outstanding) until my heart decided to go "intermittent" on me so now I stomp breathlessly around a tennis court and thoroughly enjoy long, brisk walks - amazing how much more you see walking than running! Lifelong follower of Everton FC so pretty thick skinned! Married, 3 stepsons and one nonstep son (at Uni), 4 grand daughters under three years old. I work from home two or three days a week, currently typing this out with 2 fingers on a Dell Inspiron 17" widescreen laptop in the conservatory.

I do about 35,000 miles a year visiting customers in my small IT business running the sales and commercial side of things while someone else smarter than me handles the technical side. An unplanned run in with the tax man some time ago means that the business is my pension pot so I tend to work pretty long days and drive anywhere in the UK where people threaten us with business! Don't tend to take long planned 2 week holidays anymore as my wife and I like France and visit 5 or 6 times a year for weekend or short'ish breaks usually to Normandy, Pas-de-Calais, Champagne-Ardennes or Paris. When not working or escaping to France the growing family sees that we don't sit around looking for things to do which suits me fine as I hate DIY and gardening.

Currently driving a Subaru Legacy Tourer 3.0R Spec B as a company car; it is the first auto I've had for 20 years, IMO a fine car. SWMBO has a Picanto 1.1 auto which she rates highly but not highly enough it seems as the new Fiat 500 is getting serious attention! Pet hates - Liverpool FC, 4x4s especially when piloted by suicide blondes, lane changers, tailgaters, fence sitters, whingers and petty bureaucracy.

Widower, living in Wimbledon, 54, 5'7" and a half.........auburn hair still there, just under 11 stone, drive a '51 plate Outback 2.5 with Luxpack and a '56 plate Merc 180K Sports Coupe. 2 teenage children, at uni and boarding school respectively.

Thinking of rationalising the two cars to one, thus frequent boring requests for thoughts on which way to jump. I'm not a techno-head but hugely appreciate the comments of those who have something valuable to add, rather than just saying it grips well!

Love the humour on this site, makes me think the UK is still worth living in! Many postings have me laughing out loud, [Christmas present for SWMBO was a classic].

I just turned forty last month and I'm not very happy about it. I'm sitting in my attic studio in a suburb of Warsaw, I've got a series of brochures to design for Volvo and I can't be bothered so I'll spend half an hour in the Backroom. I've got a thermometer on the window which is showing -10 but the one down in the kitchen is showing -3.

Born in Ancoats in the Salvation Army Hostel (is it still there?) worked in London for 15 years, lost Hampstead home in a divorce in 2000, met hot Polish chick and married her. Had some crazy idea that if I retained my UK clients but lived in Poland I'd be able to have quite a comfortable life and a big house with loads of bedrooms so we moved here. Also work on Polish motoring magazine as well as designing books and encyclopedias for UK market. I'm 6'2", 87kg, short brown hair, wicked sideburns, designer stubble, body full of H. R. Giger's alien tatoos which was my gift to myself for getting divorced.

Not massively into cars if I'm honest, love luxobarges, Lexus, Audi, Chrysler but it's the big cats that float my boat. My dream garage would be full of XJ and XJS all given a serious makeover by Knowles Wilkins Engineering.

I'm sitting at my wife's Acer laptop at the moment because my little boy is playing a game on my Mac. I'm now going to draw some pictures with my little girl before working into the early hours and checking in here from time to time.

Drive a Pug 307 - my weekly commute to airport. SWMBO has old dog-eared Galaxy for ferrying the three kids and dog. I also have an 83 Alfa GTV6, which was lovingly restored (at a fair cost) and has since sat rotting on my drive for three years:-(

Retired mechanical engineer after 22 years in Naval Engineering, followed by even more in civvy street. Medium build with own fangs and some hair. Born before the first electronic computer and have never really mastered them. Using NEC desktop supplied as replacement by Insurance Co. for my older H.P. which did itself some sort of internal mischief.

Learnt to drive in a Jowett Bradford station wagon [ Eh !! Wot ??] with a 3-speed crash box, and even now I automatically double-declutch when driving a manual car. Father allowed me to do the maintenance, so by 16 I was doing top overhauls and line-reaming king-pin bushes. First car that I bought for myself [ in 1960 ] was a 1933 Singer Le-Mans 2-seater when I was training in UK. Splendid machine. All down hill since then as far as motoring goes, and I now have a Prius because I wanted to find out how they work and run [ as distinct from what the polarised opinionates say]. { My Green credentials are that I am a disaster sceptic }. 18 months and 32,000 miles later, quite happy with it.

Married to a wife who has learnt to drive but hates it. Actually, I haven't met anyone else as non-technical as her, which may be a good thing as we never argue over anything at all technical, especially whether the car is running correctly, and I can repair the household appliances without her supervision.

From the BUPA website; may help some on here!

If you are having, or expecting, a heated discussion, keep the following in mind:

slow down ? think carefully about what you want to say
try to think about what is underlying the anger
be clear about what you are asking and how it can be achieved. Try using phrases like "I feel angry with you because..."
listen carefully to the other person, remembering that everyone is entitled to their own opinion
keep your cool in the face of your own and the other person's anger
you may feel offended if you are being criticised. Try not to be put off by this and keep going
be patient and ask questions to get to the heart of problem
try to be carefully assertive, rather than sarcastic or aggressive
Understand your anger

I find myself a TOG (see Terry Wogan). I can't pinpoint when this happened, I'm just certain that it has. I'm certainly grumpier and more curmudgeonly that I used to be, and find myself berating the younger generation in a way that sounds probably more like my grandfather than my father!! I do enjoy loud Heavy Metal music (recently saw Metallica at Wembley), but also the organ and prog rock... what's that about??

I'm 37.15, about 5'5" and stocky (front row rugby used to be my game, although I still have ears that don't look like cabbages). I have little hair to speak of, but keep it short so it looks like I have a choice. I sport a goatee beard, largely out of habit now. Could do with losing a few pounds (common BR theme..)
I am seated in front of a none too reliable HP PC, in my office in C. London. I'm busy (you can tell!) working out a methodology for risk-rating health organisations against a set of criteria on a certain subject, whilst simultaneously writing a journal article for the BMJ.
I usually post from work during lunch times or when my brain needs a break. I'd not thought of it like that before, but the BR is a bit like a nice local, or the smoking room, a place for banter and merriment! At home, I'm likely to be posting from the study on an ACER laptop or my imac, probably while Mrs APM watches that dancing rubbish in the loung (another common BR theme!) I am a beer connoisseur, British ale, German & Belgian. Garage contains some aged (read neglected...) bottles of very rare trappist beer. Must get around to drinking those!

Carwise, I've had a few- most of my friends are astonished that I have owned 20 cars & motorbikes in 19 years. Not unusual around here, I suspect... Lowest point was a Kawasaki Z250 that hardly ever started, and wheezed & spluttered when it did. Highpoint probably a toss up between my SEAT Leon Cupra and my first MG midget.. for very different reasons.

Currently house renovation dictates that I'm in an ageing Volvo 940S estate. Fun, in an odd sort of way. Do get to play in SWMBO's Mk1 MX5 sometimes, and have an RD350 in the garage awaiting sorting out & fun!

I'd be quite interested to run a content analysis on these responses, pick out the themes- overwhelmingly male, a bit overweight, a sofa, laptop, cats seem to feature alot. But I'm not quite that sad...

Good thread!

Everyone else seems to be posting here so I suppose I might as well. I?m 51, retired from the grind after 19 years in various government departments. Started off playing with physics at a certain Berkshire establishment, then a few years as firearms officer with the MOD Plod followed by a period in an agricultural agency. In 2000 SWMBO and I were fed up both commuting and not enjoying life, so as her career was taking off we downshifted from Berkshire and ended up in rural Lincolnshire. She?s away four days a week with a major consultancy company so I?m nursemaid and butler to five dogs and a dozen chickens. My only paid employment now is on the local coastguard search and rescue team plus I?m a volunteer first responder one day a week with LIVES (www.lives-responders.co.uk ).
Daily drive is a Subaru Legacy 3.0R Spec B saloon, plus a garage and a barn containing a Daimler SP250, Daimler Conquest, modified Rover SD1 4.6, Morris Minor van, Opel Kadett B and an International 574 tractor. I have a real weakness for classics of all sorts and I?m always perusing ebay. I tend to change the classics fairly frequently.
I look at this forum and a couple of others every day, perhaps I need to get out more. I love heavy metal and most types of rock except thrash metal (but love the band names ? Lawnmower Death, brilliant!), drink too much red wine and a little real ale and try to keep the reaper from the door by going to the gym. Guess he?ll get me in the end, but I don?t fear him!

Just like to say that I am not at least 50% of the posters.
In fact I've yet to contribute my pennyworth.

Post using a lovely Acer laptop, as 'lent' to me by previous employer who went bust, the administrators never quite got around to claiming it back :-), sat on a particularly hard wooden dining chair, dans le front room, annoying the hell out of 'er indoors with my constant, tap tap tap typing.
After spending 16 years in auditing I am now a builder, slight change of tack in career but what the hell, its a bit of a giggle, especially as I am the most un-DIYesque person on this earth, keeps me fit though.
40 in 3 weeks, 5 foot 7, 10.5 stone.
No hobbies, unless you include cider and beer, love driving, am pretty useless at anything mechanical, do a lot of Ebaying, often get on the net after one too many sherbets and have been known to bid for the dumbest things, and have won some of them. Also tend to post on sites such as the BR after too many sherbets, so apologies in advance for things you will probably read in the future.

Drive a Citroen C15D, 'er indoors has the Pug 307 now.

49 and a half, residing in Saltash, employed as a Head of English in rather a good comprehensive school. Bald and proud of it, typing on a Toshiba laptop.
I have always had a typically male fascination with cars; there is a complete set of Supercar Classic Magazines somewhere in the loft. We bought a second house in Brittany a couple of years ago and spend around ten weeks a year over there.
I drive a Berlingo and wonder whether it really is the best car I have ever owned. Right now the answer is yes! Wife has a Mazda 2 but hankers after a Fiat Grande Punto.
I read voraciously and listen attentively to anything from John Coltrane to Emmylou Harris via Frank Zappa and The Beatles. Beer does it for me rather than wine, but it has to be Belgian, bottle conditioned and potent. Westmalle Tripel hits the spot.
I like the discussion board's lack of emoticons and avatars. I do not own a mobile phone and quite like the freedom this brings.
I used to work in sales many years ago but had to get out: the orange Morris Marina with black vinyl roof was really quite an appalling company car.

But not as bad as the Chrysler Avenger Estate I had previously.

Of course it is! And if more of these Legacy and Outback owners tried the Berlingo, they'd think so too ;-)

Well, well. My parents used to have one of those!

Today I'm posting from my UK office Dell in the immediate vicinity of Gatport Airwick.

I'm 58 , 6'1" and just under 16 stone. Hair greying and kept very short all over.

I am UK manager of a very large helicopter operation based in the middle east flying Bell and Sikorski Helicopters to the oilfields in the Gulf. USD 6000 per hour if you want to hire one....

I regularly travel out there in the course of my work which is mainly these days buying and selling civil and military helicopter spares and oilfield equipment . I spend millions of pounds a year for my customers .

Last week it was 35 degrees C and I bought 30 litres for my hired Mitsubishi at a cost equivalent of £2.80 sum.

I did 30 hours without sleep from 3am UK time last Thursday to 10 am Friday flying back overnight from Doha.

If you think negotiating deals with car salesmen is tough try an Arab Brigadier for a £ 1 million + contract to supply their airforce..... having said that , I enjoy my job immensley although it can be very stressful

Home is a comfortable bungalow in West Sussex where I post from my study on my leather office chair usually with a glass of Rioja or Merlot somewhere to hand. My home computer was built for me by a good friend.

Married 33 years and counting.

Drive a Honda Accord Tourer , Company Vectra Estate and SWMBO's Yaris.

Reclining in the cold of my 1920's ex council house in Bath (I live on the cheap side looking at the Crescent). It's cold because I took up the carpets and sanded the floorboards. But didn't insulate while I had them up...... must get round to doing that some time.

5'10", filled out, 35 years old. Going grey and increasingly cynical. Does it worse as you get older. Chartered Surveyor turned Property Developer. Gone from doing everything between me and my mate to employing 8 people in a year.

Family is very poorly wife of 10 years and two hyperactive boys (8 and 6). Wife currently crashed out in bed recovering from dialysis, kids thankfully gone to bed.

Fleet comprises '06 Mitsubishi Grandis resprayed in Colt Blue with tints as requested by Mrs Mare for the weekends. In the week she drives a '52 reg Peugeot 206CC that i bought off a mate dead cheap and I drive a Subaru Impreza WRX Wagon in World Rally Blue, which is fantastic. It was hard to give away my old Almera, it did me well.

Who can resist posting on a thread like this???

I'm in my office downstairs at home in Bucks. Usually browsing and posting occur when I need a little relief from work - like now, it seems. My machine is a Thinkpad Z60m laptop. Work is risk management consultant in life insurance industry; I run a small firm with my biz partner.

6 ft, 11st 7lb, hair thin and cut short with a no 1 or 0. Age 55, though people keep saying I look younger - yes, really! When I'm in the office (and not seeing clients), dress is casual and very comfortable...

Cars: 07/56 BMW 320d Touring , 05/05 MINI Cooper S.

I'm shortish, tubby and several hundred years old. Like many others on this site, I'm balding, but when outside, I try to cover this up with a pointed red hat. I sport a long white beard.

My occupation is these days best described as manufacturing and logistics, dealing mainly in children's toys. I'm writing this entry on a very smart laptop which I was unable to deliver to the Renault Family a few years ago on account of them changing their name/address. Oh well, their loss is our gain, as I often say to the elves in these circumstances.

Oh, I should mention that my transport is a 8 brp cabrio sleigh. It really flies along. It only comes out of the garage once a year but the running costs are huge!

Who can resist posting on a thread like this???

Well I've managed to resist for a while ...

I'm 6' 2" and 15 stone, 55, bearded and greying but not losing much hair yet. I used to be in IT for 30 years but now am working part-time as a handyman/gardener and teaching swimming, Mrs H having kindly volunteered to have the only proper job between us. My Citroen C8 usually has the seats folded, boot full of tools and seat-covers on, towing a small trailer, while I potter around the local lanes from customer to customer. Mrs H occasionally lets me take her C3 for a blast, and I am also to be found behind the wheel of a Citroen AX which my son uses to go to college. In a feeble effort to be fashionably green, I cycle the 6 miles to the swimming pool in all weathers for my teaching duties. An mediaeval Acer laptop running Windows ME and Firefox gives me shared access to the Internet via a wired-in router. The walls are just too thick to allow wireless working. To post here, I sit sipping from a glass of Bells at my desk in the corner of the living room, which is a strictly temporary arrangement lasting only until the builders have finished hacking our old house around and I get my study back.

Missed this thread:

Early 40's, 5' 11", and about 13st ........ ok 14 st, married and three kids 7 to 13, self-employed marketing consultant, done a few different things though spent 15 years in the corporate rat race, quite close to F1 at one time on the sponsorship side, follow F1 fairly closely though now mainly from the armchair.

More passionate about motorbikes than cars these days though sailing is the real passion, never had the time (or money) to really indulge. Got out of the new car (and new bike!) every couple of years cycle, the 5 year old 125k mile Mondeo Ghia X TDCi and 8 year old 1.6 Clio are worth more to us that we would get for them so will probably stick around for a while still, that is unless we decide to get the 7 seater we have taked about for a few years now. The '97 Kawasaki ZRX1100 is a bit of a classic now and is subtely modified making it quite a tool, it replaced a 2003 ZX7R two years ago which itself was extensivley modified to the extent that is was a full on WSB replica.

Money no object we would probably have a C55 or E63 estate, an S-Max (perhaps a 2.2 TDCi when/if it comes), an 5 to 7 year old Elise 111s or similar, a '99 R7 (OWO2) or an '06 R1 in Roberts colours, a WRF450, a Beneteau First 36.7 and something with a couple of large Yamaha outboards. If I was really indulgent then I would like a 612 Scagletti or perhaps an SL60.

Normally post from my Dell workstation with superb FP2007 20" 1600x1200 LCD though sometimes from my Acer notebook.

Regards.

Great thread, not sure how I managed to miss it a month ago!!

I'm 34, hung like a rabbit and go like a donkey, have 2 honda's in the family, no intention of changing away from the brand. Post either from the cheap Lenovo laptop (it spends time in the car alone, so would rather a cheap one get nicked rather then an expensive one) lounging on the sofa or from my 7'x7' coffin of a home office from a self built PC/server. Work for myself in transport management and have no intention of going back to work for fools for a pittance!!

Currently in a long distance relationship, enjoying life in between of course.
Not enough money to buy a house though ;-)

Does that say anything?
