hi there,
have been offered a VW Bora 1.9TDI PD 100bhp Highline in black with black leather interior. its a 2004 54 plate. Just turned 3 years old.Full MOT. Mileage is 121k. 1 owner from new with full vw history. heated seats.air con.cruise etc.
Asking price is £6700.
What are these cars like?
Is the price good or high?
100bhp doesnt seem allot for a big car......is it enough for the bora?
Anyone got any experience of these cars.
I have had aquick look around the car and it looks clean, few stone chips on the bonnet from motorway driving.
Im doing around 24k miles a year, mainly daily commute for work.
Any comments appreciated

The VAG power trains including the PD engines are durable if properly maintained. Confusion and incompetence abound within the VAG dealer network - the weak spots of the PD diesel are incorrect oil and cambelt changes. The water pump with a plastic impeller is another joker you could do without.
I have not studied prices of Borae (?) but intuitively, at that price I'd want 100k miles less on the clock. I know it's not the same car, but my Skoda Superb (130 PS engine) of the same age was little more money and had 20k on the clock when I bought it. Perhaps this is the price of image.
As for the engine power - drive it and see. The PD engines have loads of low speed torque and once on boost they pull very well. The Superb is a (horrible looking) lump, but performance is just not an issue with this engine - it would be very easy to lose your licence as it's also quiet in a big body. The efficiency of the PD engines is just about unmatched too - the Superb will do over 50 mpg (without my trailer) with the cruise set to 75 mph.

The Highline version of the Bora had every possible feature available throughout the range.
I've have a Bora 1.6SE and that's very well equipped (Model 2000 Year); a pal who admired it bought the Highline version three years ago (diesel) and is very happy with it.

The highline models were the runout models so had loads of spec on them however the 1.9TDi 100 isnt going to set the world alight with its performance.

I was surprised, when the m-i-l bought a Highline, that it was spec'd with just the standard manual aircon rather than VW's climate control. Was the Bora ever supplied with 'climate'?

So you've gone off the idea of a BMW 330 then?

Seems a pretty steep price - there are similar age 130 bhp models on Autotrader with less miles for less money.
We have a 3 year old Passat with this engine (100bhp) in it and an auto box. It pulls away well enough from standstill and once on the move has plenty of poke for normal use. On the motorways it gets up to speed quite quickly and maintaining cruising speed up hills is no problem. Noisy (very) when cold and not without vibrations around town. We average just under 40mpg in mixed driving and 45 on a run which IMO is pretty good. My local independent rates the 1.9 VAG engines very highly and has several clients with between 200K and 300K miles on their cars. The right oil is so important so if you can have sight of service records that confirm the correct oil was used and that the cam belt was changed at 60K and at 120K that should help but the price is still too high IMO.

My dad bought his 100 highline about 10 months ago, 55 plate with 5000 miles on the clock for £7795 after trade in. He had a V6 mondeo before which he traded it in on, and although he's very impressed with the fuel economy, he's not over the moon with the power it's got. Although he did get very excited when I mentioned a company called Jabbasport who specialize in tuning for VAG engines. They can take the 90bhp engine and give it a remap that will then produce up to 125bhp, with a significant increase in torque. I had an Octavia RS a while back, and Jabba remapped the engine to 225bhp from 180bhp. www.jabbasport.co.uk/ Or these guys do a free trial www.revotechnik.com/products/softwareProduct.aspx?...8
