Cruise control or not? - Neil Mallory
I'm looking to buy a used Ford Galaxy which I intend to use for long distance driving ( 600+ miles in a day).
Doing a search on Autotrader for upto £8000, diesel and cruise control only gives a handful of results (22). A search without cruise control returns 200+

Does anyone have any experience driving long distances in the Galaxy and if so, would you say that you can do without cruise control?

Is there a better place to look than Autotrader? I need a trader as I want to trade in my old car at the same time.

Where on the net can I find a service schedule?

Neil

We had a VW Sharan which is what the Galaxy is based on and I think on the Carat model in the Sharan and the Ghia models in the Ford range. I take that you are looking at MKi or MkII if so most can be retrofited by a VW specialist with VAG com and the toatal job is between £250-£400 also assuming the car uses a VW sourced lump.

Neil, not sure how the AT search function works but it may well be that there are more with cruise control on it but they just haven't ticked the correct box when setting up the advert?

I have not used the CC on a Galaxy for long periods, but do use it when possible in my own car. If you are doing 600 miles per trip then I assume you are sitting on a quiet motorway such as the M6 north of Preston?

In that case CC is absolutely perfect. I drive to Glasgow about once a year from Manchester and it just eats the miles up.

We have a 2005 Sharan - its an SE (130 TDi) so middle of the range and that has no cruise, however I can recomed it for motorway cruising. Sitting around 70 you can get 45+MPG from it which I think is pretty credible given the size, and even if you gun it its pretty hard to get down into the 30's

Before you buy the galaxy you may like to take a look at the Sharan - when I bought ours I managed to get a pre reg one from a VW dealer for less than I could source a 12 month old Galaxy plus the Sharan can be operated with long life servicing. Now I know many on here will lambast me for suggesting such a thing, but if you are doing that many miles then you may be able to keep your servicing costs down a bit plus spend less time in the dealers.

We have operated ours on long life servicing and have covered 35K in two years with one service at 22K so far and expecting the next to be around 40K

How is it for long distances. The 406 I currently have is OK but I have an aching right ankle from keeping the pedal pressed all the time when I do my cross Europe drives.

This was the main reason for wanting cruise control but they seem few and far between and scattered all over the country. I'm mainly asking the question to see if I can get away without needing cruise control and therefore open up my oprtions.

Does the upright seating position make it more comfortable for the long distances?

Also how is the wind and road noise at motorway speeds?
