I seem to remember reading a thread about a tag system for paying tolls by direct debit. I cant seem to find it on the forum search, does anyone have any information?. As swmbo likes to sleep when we travel at night I thought an automated system might be easier!

More likely the use of debit cards - or credit cards, not DD.

The Telepeage system is excellent and saves lots of time and effort (ie getting out of the car when SWMBO is asleep).

Take care not to get too close to the vehicle in front (as I did on first using it) otherwise you operate the barrier for him.

Second warning. Don't stick it to the windscreen. Its the same as leaving a satnav on display.

I can't remember the last time I got stuck in a queue at the autoroute tolls, but nothing is more frustrating than queing up to pay a toll. I know to my annoyance, I've used the M25 at Dartford too many times in the past.

I'll be on the Autoroute des Anglais (A26) next month, back down to Grenoble 'VFR', so have decided to sign up for one of these transponders. For non French residents it does require a Credit Card, Matercard or Visa only

Note there is something similar at Dartford too, Dart tag, (it even offers a 7.5% discount to card holders!!)

You need an English credit card and your card is debited automatically. They will also ask you to send a photocopy of your credit card.

They are very efficient and wrote to me asking for a photocopy of my new credit card when it was due for replacement. I've had mine a few years now and have had no problems.

Sorry, I misread your post. Thought you were asking if you needed a credit card.

Can also be used in car-parks in some towns.

I got a Liber-t tag from http://www.saneftolling.co.uk. We've just got back from Nice and it saved us loads of time on the autoroutes. We had a tag a few years ago that we got from Sanef in France but to get a new one in France you now need to have a French bank account. they are still allowing existing customers to pay by credit card but the doors are closed to new subscribers and payment by credit card is due to be phased out altogether by the end of 2012. The Sanef UK service requires you to pay from a UK bank account by direct debit.

I ordered a tag late Tuesday afternoon and it arrived Wednesday morning - I can't praise Sanef UK enough for their customer service as it has been excellent. We're off to Bordeaux in September so will definitely be using it again!

I have a Liber-T device from Sanef on my Amex and it's been a real boon, removes all the aggravation. A few peages don't have a dedicated T barrier so then you have to queue like everyone else but I do allow myself a wry smile when someone flies past just before the peage and queue up for a few minutes to pay cash. We sail through and it's quite a long time before they re-catch us with our 3 or 4 minute lead at 130 kph.

It is no longer possible to get a Liber-t tag using a credit card with any of the French toll operators. Existing credit card customers are still being supported but all payment by credit card is being phased out by 2012. The different toll operators are making their own arrangements but the response I got from Sanef was that they would be contacting all UK customers later in the year to migrate them to payment by direct debit. You will still obviously be able to pay by credit/debit card at the toll booths.

I got a Liber-t tag from Sanef Tolling in the UK ( www.saneftolling.co.uk ) which allows you to pay by direct debit from a UK bank account. Basically if you've got a French bank account you're still better off signing up in France but if you don't have a French bank account, the only operator that currently allows you to pay by direct debit from a UK bank account is Sanef.

Sanef has set up a UK office in Harrogate to service motorist with a UK bank account who need a Liber T tag. The initial set up us via a direct debit with the first payment being 39.14 euros. This includes a 20 euro deposit for the transponder, which is refundable upon its' return. They will invoice you monthly for any tolls you have used and include a 5 euro service charge, taken via direct debit. I think it is wise to consider how many tolls you are likely to pay in France and set this against the cost of set up and service costs. Personally I have travelled using cash and the tag and have experienced very few problems at peages either with paying cash/card or waiting times, so the advantages are not that clear cut. I do however mainly travel when the roads are fairly quiet, which suits me. You pays your money etc etc. Cheers Concrete

I queried the monthly fees with Sanef UK as I wasn't sure about them. There is a €5 monthly service fee for each calendar month that you actually use the tag BUT ONLY UP TO A MAX of €10 per year from the date of sign up. If you don't use the tag, there is no monthly fee to pay.

I have an older style tag direct from France, the monthly fee is €2 - or was last time I used it earlier this year. So to charge €5 looks to be another example of 'Rip off Britain'
