EGR valve on a 2002 16v question - EML on. - moop
The "engine management system" warning light has come on on my Skoda Fabia 16V 2002 model and the first time the garage said to me that it needed resetting and they did that.

Unfortunately 2 days later the light came back on - they looked at the car again and now are saying that the EGR valve is clogged up and needs removing and cleaning and 4 gaskets need replacing as well.

I phoned another registered Skoda garage and they said any number of things could be causing the light to come on - but if it was the EGR valve they would replace it - they would never clean it and put it back.

I have read various bits on the internet where people are saying the EGR valve is difficult to remove and clean and doesn't always work.

Any advice?

The Briskoda forum has one or two pointers on the apparent problem, which might be worth trying out before spending large amounts. Enter EGR on the search function. I know nothing re the 16v so I just mention this as a possibility, amongst other things, no doubt!

engine management lights come on for all sorts of reasons.

Did they put a scanner on the car and if so what were the codes that they read?

I would be dubious of a place that thinks that just resetting the light makes it OK if they didn't do anything else.

I would have a good check over the various hoses for damage ./ splits

People do clean egr's but is it worth it? How much is a new one (shop around don't just get the main dealer price) I would rather pay for a new part than pay the time for them to clean an old part..

After much research on internet and having phoned garage again - they are saying that it is the pipes to the EGR valve that are clogged up and this is giving error code P401 - EGR too low.

Any more advice?
