Using the hard shoulder to jump queues - DP
Is it just me or is this becoming more and more common? I reckon on my M25 commute, I see at least one car a week blasting up the hard shoulder and carving its way back into the queue ahead .

Anyone else noticed this. Where are the rozzers when you need them?

Along with people who get in the incorrect lane to make up ground and then block that lane waiting to get back into their correct lane, these people should be prosecuted!

Cheers

the police do sometimes stop this.

was once on the A3 and they had closed it in both directions and the queue was pretty bad. Quite a few cars used the hard shoulder only to meet with the police further up the road.

Probably stuck in the same traffic jam as you!

DP, you know they have all been replaced by speed cameras! Driving up the hard shoulder is therefore now a non-prosecutable offence, unless of course you break the speed limit and trigger the camera.

On one occasion I have seen a Highways Agency traffic patrol doing so too.
They had parked in the hard shoulder just before an exit slip road, and appeared to be taking down names and numbers of 3 or 4 offending drivers. The drivers queuing in lane 1 did not seem too keen to let them back in to get round the HA vehicle..

there's a slip road off the M90 at Rosyth that dips down from the main carriageway. Sometimes plod waits down there for the impatient ones who use the hard shoulder when the traffic's backed up southbound from the Forth Road Bridge - always makes me chuckle when they get caught 'cos if you look carefully you can usually see the white tops of their caps when they're standing down there waiting.

Wasn't there a case a few years ago of a big name in the playground game of kickball being caught doing this, then being excused on the grounds of bladder-control problems?

bladder-control problems?

No he claimed he'd got food poisoning and had to get to the loo IIRC. Why he was driving whilst obviously unfit to do so is another argument altogether ;-)

It's the usual suspects who think their journey's more important than everyone else's. I got caught up in huge tailbacks on the M1 earlier in the year, and every car that hurtled past in the hard shoulder had a German "executive" badge on it, and no doubt an arrogant pink fluffy dice behind the wheel.

People who do this should be summarily shot through the lungs.

Next!

I use the hard shoulder most nights to jump the queues - fortunately for me its on the M42 where those nice people at the HA actually allow it. Works brilliantly well most of the time!

I was watching a motorway patrol type program recently and they were in a camera control room over looking the entrance to Heathrow.

They caught someone on screen going down the hard shoulder to avoid the queues. No police available to stop him so they popped a NIP in the post (something nice for his return from holiday.....)

It's one of the few things that a scamera should be used for, IMHO, along with catching red light jumpers.

I had to drive an off-duty police driving instructor along around the M25 back in 1993 during the morning rush. Traffic, as usual came to a halt by junction 10 and a white van used the hard shoulder. "Don't worry about him, said my travelling companion, "every inch of this motorway is covered by cameras 24 hours a day, he'll receive a visit from my collegues later when it is safe to do so".

Remember being in huge near-standstill jam on M2 in Kent where some louts in a Warrior pick up roared down the hard shoulder. The artic a few vehicles ahead of me then drove his cab across the hard shoulder to stop others doing the same. Minutes later two neanderthals in a Transit also came hurtling down the hard shoulder and tried to drive up the embankment round the artic. This caused the artic driver to move his cab closer so the Transit simply wheelspun its way up the embankment even further.......and was 80% round until the back wheels lost grip and the back of the Transit slid gently into the front of the artic. The Transit erupted into a tyre spinning frenzy as the driver tried to regain control and, sadly, he did - bumping his way back onto the hard shoulder and disappearing into the distance. Not sure if anyone got their number but judging by the size of the lorry driver a getaway was a lucky escape for these cretins. Various obscene hand gestures indicated that by-standing motorists would have gladly watched the lorry driver dish out a beating.

Yeah seen this many times before...

The best bit is when they put their hazzard warning lights on whilst doing it as if that makes it ok...?!!?

Was in an airport coach stuck on a German autobahn in site of a slip road but no-one used the shoulder as there was a marked police car also in the queue. As the times of our flights got closer, the coach driver got out and went up to the police car-the two police men in it got out and waved our coach up to the slip road.
