I've got one which is a socket with a loop of bicycle chain through a hole in it. You wrap the chain round the old filter and turn, and the chain tightens as you do so. Works very well.

My brother in law suggested screwdriver method but he's also told me once while doing this on a Ford Focus the cover of the filter came off but it never loosened so I'll try it as a last resort :-)

mine is a loop of webbing on a fitting that goes on the end of a ratchet. Never been foxed for access yet as you can add extensions or a universal joint ect.

I've used the screwdriver method successfully before, the only downside is that it's messy. I'd try it, but be sure to put the screwdriver RIGHT through the filter (i.e. so it pokes out the other side). It should then take the strain without breaking up. You'll need a big screwdriver though, and a hammer with which to insert it! ;-)
