Primera 97 (1.6 Si) has now become Primera 00 (2.0 Sport which I am VERY pleased with)

I am after 4 new tyres 205/50/16 V rated.

I popped into a tyre dealer near work and he suggested a 205/55/16 would give a better ride.
Is this likely to cause any problems?

He suggested Kumho tyres at £60 each all in for either the 50 or 55 profile and both in stock.

Any advice on the profile and tyre choice appreciated.
I drive around 17K miles a year in a mostly relaxed style.

Thanks

55 would give a slightly softer ride if they fit ok in the wheel arches/track rod ends, the speedo would read slightly slow so you need to be aware for the mileage/speed cameras you may pass.
v rated =dear
kumho are cheapest new (ie budget tyres in my wholesalers book, thats why i like them on bread and butter stuff) so are not the best for your mileage, personally for your mileage i would be looking for better makes.
shop around and look on the internet for corrosponding prices of better makes, remember if your dealer is pushing these he is either making a good bounce or the fitter gets a free watch at the end of the promotion period

IIRC on this forum, Kumho tyres have been rated significantly higher than "budget for bread and butter stuff"

"BMW now using Kumho on certain options "

Nothing wrong with Kumho tyres, they're cheap but more than cheerful. Personally would stick with the OE-size tyres rather than fitting ones with a larger diameter. As discussed it'll knock your speedo out a bit, and there's no guarantee it'd do much for the ride either. Hankooks are also Korean, but one step up from Kumho IMO, if your wallet will stretch to a set of them.

Bell Boy,

Sorry to be a bit dim but...
I understand about fitting in the wheel arches but what do you mean with the track rods?
Do you mean if they interfere with the inner-wing under full lock?

The full lock on the P11-144 is terrible.
I have embarrased myself on more than one occasion trying to get into parking spaces during my first week of ownership!

You can easily find Kumho tyres in your size sold by various wholesalers on eBay for anywhere between £150 and £180 for 4 new tyres. But to be honest I think you will hate them on Primera Sport. I had 712's on my Primera in that size and they are what I can only describe as "soft" - the car started to feel like it was slightly tramlining and wandering, especially at low and mid speeds. Returning to set of Conties immediately cured the problem.

My '94 Kia Pride has still got one of of its original white sidewall Hancooks fitted, and it feels like shat (past tense deliberate, it's that old). Unfortunately no-one else seems to make anything in that 12" size. Any suggestions?
C'mon BB, I think DDs dozing (beaking, micking & tishing).

Kumho are moving away from being a 'budget brand' - their latest tyres are much better than those of a couple of years back and prices have also risen quite a bit!
I recently put a set of Kumho ECSTA Sport KU31 in 205/50/R16-W on a Mitsubishi FTO. They replaced Toyo proxies and the owner was delighted with their performance. I think the KU31 also came top (along with Conti and Michelin) in recent AutoBild tyre test. As I said, they are not that cheap now though.

The Kumho 712 mentioned above is an old tyre and I think its been out of production for at least a year or two.

Stick with your OE size. A move to a 55 from a 50 won't feel much different.

Thanks Aprillia.

I will stick to the 50s and give Kumho a try.
The car is tramlining at the moment, so any new tyres should be an improvement.

I only noticed that it needed tyres rather than what was fitted when I looked at the car.
It has 3 various Michelin pilots and one Pirelli P6000 (with a completely different tread pattern) on the front O/S.

Hopefully changing oil, filters, coolant and brake pads if it doesn't rain in Manchester today.

Thanks for the comments/advice.

Bathtub Tom,
My tyres seem to sell a 12" Kumho and a Falken for your Pride.

depending on size bathtub tom you can still get 145/12 or 155/12 0r 155/70/12 falken hankook or camac only though, the days of avon or michelin knocking out these sizes has long gone ,why.. you dont even hear of bulldog remoulds anymore.
If you really want to let the boat out then cheng shin do a reinforced 140/70 12 but i would sit down for the price as my book says £60 each.trade, wonder if its a mussprint?
kumho are still a budget brand ,i remember when these used to come into this country in containers and we had to stick innertubes in the casings for a week so that the things would blow up onto the wheel rims.
Looking in my book only a kingstar is lower in the pecking order, obviously a remould is even lower but as everyone knows these only come R rated and only when suitable casings become available to make them on,something that doesnt happen too often these days now that nobody fits michelin as standard oe tyre choice eg ford

Yes, I remember having to do this trick, sometimes I also had to tie a torniquet around the centre of the tread to try to push the bead out a bit - all of this is why I haven't gone near the brand since - however, if they are beginning to get better, perhaps I'll give them a try.

I fitted 205/60 15 Goodyear Excellence to my Astra, they're much better for ride and noise than the OE Michelins fitted - £58 each including vat, valve, balance and disposal - at my local independent garage who can almost always undercut internet prices, by pence, when all the extras are added.

Can anyone hold their hand on heart and honestly say that there is a difference in ride quality between a 50 and a 55 profile tyre ?
We're talking about 10mm difference in height on a 205 width.
In my experience the make/variant of tyre would make a more difference.
E.g. The Michelin Primacy HP tyres which replaced the Michelin Pilot Primacys, of the same size, on my mondeo give a softer ride.

I used to fit Kuhmo wherever possible on my van as they always gave excellent service. Couldn't find them for the Master but would recommend above most choices.
