Moly grease - Dave N
I'm replacing the front CV joints in the axle, and the book calls for a molybdenum disulphide grease. This doesn't seem to be so easy to get hold of, off the shelf, any more.

Does anyone know of an modern alternative?

Most motor factors keep CV grease in sachets. That is MoS2 grease.

Thanks. Maybe I'm confusing them by calling it moly grease. I'll give them a try for CV grease instead. I reckon I need about 2kg for the hubs.

Castrol [and Molyslip] used to do it in tins. I think the swap to sachets was probably because a multi-used tin can easily get contaminated and grit in a CV is very bad news indeed.

Renault used to do some monstrous sachets; about half-a-kilo - might be worth an ask at the parts counter.

Moly grease is readily available either as CV joint kit sachets or in tins. This is indeed the correct grease to use in a Rzeppa type CV joint (the type with 6 big balls in it) but don't use it on any other rolling bearing. Try to use the specified quantity but if in doubt, don't overfill. How you distribute the grease is absolutely irrelevant - it will centrifuge itself into position very quickly after a run.

The inner joints on most vehicles are tripode joints which use (usually) 3 spherically ground roller wheels which are themselves mounted via needle roller bearings to the joint spider. Using moly grease here spells disaster, as the rollers have no cage and will tend to slide rather than roll if moly grease is used. The same applies to wheel bearings - although most are now fully sealed and pre-packed with the correct grease.

I got one of the big tubs of Moly grease from Halfords. On the same shelf as the tubs of normal lithium and copper grease.
