removing smell of tobacco smoke - dxp55
I know this has been covered before and have spent half hour searching and keep coming up with same answer "ciggy burns cost £50 time" -page's of same answer.
When I got my car last December the dealer "bless his heart" made a good job of masking this evil smell from a heavy smoker - after a month, whatever he put in wore off and since then I have wiped all interior trim with cleaners -wipes etc and sprayed all fabric with "Febrese" -replaced A/C filter's and sprayed them with Febrese works for a bit then sun comes out and smell returns. -is there anything out there diy rather than the Ionised air job that could reduce the smell. - like bowl of lemons and cat litter :-) or something like that - or was that for damp.

Thanks Dave

Big Bag of Bicarbonate of Soda. Sprinkle all over, brush into the carpet/seat covers etc, and leave overnight (or even longer!) before hoovering up.
Make the interior look like Christmas - throw it all over the place!
The biggest problem is the smell in the headliner (smoke rises, after all), but a bicarb/water solution sponged on may help there.

Extensive use of Neutradol, Oust or similar odour neutralisers will go a long way to getting rid of the smell.

I was browsing a local indie dealer last year when I came across a car parked outside their workshops that was full of what looked like thick grey smoke. It was so thick it had rendered the windows completely opaque. I couldn't even make out the sides of the seat backrests.

The salesman could clearly see my bemused expression, and he explained it was a "deodorising bomb". Apparently it's placed in the car and set off and it fills the car with deodorising spray which absorbs into the trim, headlining and carpets. He reckoned it worked brilliantly for getting rid of tobacco and pet smells.

Where you get these things from, I don't know. It makes sense that it would work because it's left to absorb, and gets into all the nooks and crannies.

Cheers
DP

I know this isn't DIY but check out this article for an insight into some of the more obscure places to get rid of the smell!

Might be worth getting it fogged as well with one of those odour eating bomb things.

Sounds like a job for Coleen McLoughlin's new perfume collection. And you should be able to buy it by the bucket-load in the Poundshop.

I once read that a put-into-your-tumble-drier-to-condition-your-clothes sheet of BOUNCE placed under the seat in the car will cure the smell.

No idea if it works, but google bounce cure car smell

It certainly never fails to make my garage smell nice! :-)

I would like to try the bounce idea but my tumble dryer is out in yard and spins in wind - anyway thanks for the ideas - seems Comma do a A/C refresh kit - which shall get tomorrow - reading some forums they recon it works if a bit messy on inside of car.

You don't need to buy the Comma kit - you will get exactly the same result if you spray the interior with Neutradol, Oust or similar and leave the A/C running on recirculation for five minutes or so with the doors closed.

This subject has been raised several times in recent months.

Big bag of grass cuttings in the boot - Er perhaps that's for kiddy vomit and damp dogs! Could be worth a cheap try, assuming you have a lawn!

But then how do you get rid of the smell of damp grass?

Once in the car wash queue I was shocked to see a young lad working there starting to pressure wash the inside! Never did find out why. But I bet it gets rid of smells! Goodness knows why he did it - maybe his boss said "and that car needs cleaning inside too" but didn't mean pressure hosing the insides!

The grass cutting smell is quite pleasant in itself and soon goes with the air on Fresh and/or the windows open for a few miles.

I did that today with the Oust but still thought I would use the comma as well - one thing I can recommend is not getting a lung full of Oust - has been a bit windy here today and you need one door open a bit - I don't think I will try the grass cuttings

You are not supposed to sit IN the car....:-)

Re the Comma - you are probably paying eight to 10 times as much for it as for Neutradol (the original of these type of products).

Tesco sell a Carplan version of the Comma aircon cleaner for about a fiver (if my memory serves me correctly), which looks to be pretty much identical but a lot cheaper than from car accessory places.

Oh!! :-))

Got a can from Tesco's - half the cost of Comma - did job this afternoon and all seemed to go well - no mess no fuss - perhaps my car is bigger then those catered for as there was no residue anywhere - proof of pudding will be tomorrow when take car out - also got a Nutrothingy car air freshener

Thanks again for input
