Hello
I have just purchased a 06 plate Mondeo Ghia X 2.0 Petrol 11,000 miles
How do I reset the ECU
Can i just remove the ECU fuse from the fuse box will that do the trick.
My reason for doing this is that I don't want the previous owners driving habits to lower my fuel consumption.

Usually disconnecting the battery for half an hour will do it. But be sure to have any radio codes etc to hand afterwards. Although with the more modern ECU's I'm not sure if this is neccesary.

Where did this idiotic idea of "resetting" ECUs come from? Don't play with fire; it'll fine-tune to you in 20 miles.

It is said that on the TDCis they can benefit from an ECU reset every year or so, it triggers the ECU to "re-learn" the driver's style. Dont think this spplies to the petrol models though if the OP wants to try it then disconnect the battery for at least 30 mins. As has been said have the radio code handy and the handbook to reset the anti-pinch windows and elec roof (if fitted) if required.

I think 're-setting' ECU's is a folk-myth. There may be some value in this when a component has been changed or some modification made to the powertrain, but under normal driving the ECU uses a continuous 'moving window' of recent data to compute the various correction factors and 'trims'. Its not remembering how it was driven a year ago!

I am 100% sure that Aprilia knows what he is talking about. I had the embarassment of gutting stuck in a pool of liquid clay a few days ago, miles off a blacktop road - very tricky! I dug myself out using lots of revs and wheel spin and when I cheked on the fuel computer to see what my 'Range' was it came out at 100 miles on a 1/2 tank - should have been about 300! Over the next hundred miles the Range went up from 100 to 250! This confirms what A says with regard to calculations being made over the driving style of a time/distance window in the recent use of the car.

Myth-whether you disconnect or just drive it will still take about 15 minutes to reset to the engine and vehicles characteristics.
|
with it still being under warranty I would not mess about with it at all.
Service due soon anyway at 12,500 , let the dealer do what is necessary.
I have one of those, when bought the av mpg was 22!, soon up to 35.
so far - now 22K -runs very sweetly indeed

How long before this features on a service sheet and can be charged for?
Reset Ecu and Road test to relearn = £100 please. But then it was driven by the young lad and he drove it wrong so its learnt everything wrong and has to be reset again by the old bloke please because he drives more like how I want to.
Or even, get it reset and then driven by the most miserly driver you can find so that it learns a very economical way of driving for the year and could thus save the cost of the service.
Do you still have to use the pedals after it has been reset? Because if so that might upset the economy it has just learnt?
Myth! As others have said 20 minutes of driving and it forgets all about the maniac that was in it last week, month, year.
