mazda 323 noise?

I have a strange problem with my 2000 Mazda 323 Diesel. I keep getting a sqeeky/rattle type noise only when the engine is hot, it's worse when accelerating at around 2500rpm or if you hold the throttle steady, soon as you lift of it goes?

I was thinking that it's an engine noise but it's only when the car is moving so I am now suspecting a gearbox or clutch problem?

Anyone have any ideas?

For what it's worth when I test drove a Mazda 323 TD in 2002 the sales rep commented that the engine had been improved and 'had lost the characteristic rattle of the earlier version'.

they are a bit rattly when cold, but this noise is a recent thing so it must be down to something else?
