1998 Corsa 1.2 12v - stiff steering - ellybob
hi all,
my wife has got a 1998 Corsa Breeze 12v and only when turning right, the steering wheel is very stiff, but not all the time. any suggestions.

Although I've not experienced it myself, others have reported here that this is sign that the electric power steering is failing.

very common problem on the corsa you will be changeing the steering column soon, basically it's a large wipermotor bolted to the steering column which is geared,it then turns clockwise and anticlockwise as required this assists the steering

could it be the wipermotor that has the problem or will it be the column, the only reason i ask is that i will be trying to find a second hand part off the internet.

As it's a common fault, personally I would source a new part rather than one that *may* also be faulty.

there should be plenty of good s/h ones available now from good sources mind
they used to be a fortune from main agent and the price could well make you scrap the car
you could always consider putting the steering column to non electric steering a downshaft from a breaker shouldnt break the bank and any competant garage should be able to swap it all over in less than 2 hours
consider 24/7 for your parts delivered to your door,i use them quite often and have to say its usually better and cheaper than going scrap yard hunting

thnx for your help, i priced a new one from vauxhall just out of interest, and was quoted £700.00. i am going to take it out myself and hopefully fix it as i work in an engineering shop i can make bushes and order bearings if necessary. i was quoted £91.00 for a s/h one so if it can't be fixed i will get that.
