Had an enforced day off from building work today, so decided to take Leonard (my 12 y/o Defender) for a trip up the A65 to the Lakes, then myself for a long walk on the fells, leaving him with a nice view over Thirlmere.
Just past Clapham I was overtaken by a Cayenne, which I then had the misfortune to follow all the way up to the M6, where it shot off at warp speed on the dual carriageway, heading towards Windermere. My God but is that rear end ugly. It definitely comes second best to a bear with dysentery, and looks like it has been beaten to within an inch of its life with an ugly stick. Twice we had to stop directly behind it..once at KL and also for the new pipeline at Ingleton. Leonard winced.
Before any amateur psychologists same that I am jealous, I am not! Doubtless it has stupendous performance and handling, with interior trim and fit to match, but my terrier could have done a better design job than Porsche on its rear quarters.
Can anyone think of a more ugly vehicle when viewed from behind?

"Can anyone think of a more ugly vehicle when viewed from behind?"

easy:
Any BMW styled by Bangle.
New Astra
All new Renaults
Last Ford Granada.

And that's without trying.

Then:
Jaguar S type (retro styling without flair)
And Rolls or Bentley 1967 to 2000
ALL 4x4s with spare wheel on the rear door.

The list is endless.

Leonard has his spare wheel on the rear door, and you wouldn't want to upset him would you?

I'm struggling to think of a more pointless car than a Cayenne, even considering the low standard already set my SUV's it is a stupid car.

The V6 costs £35k. That money get's you a really good 5 Series. 155 mph, 6.5 secs to 60 and 32mpg (allegedly).

£35k for a Cayenne gets you performance that won't shake a modern diesel hatch back off (that can be had for half the cost) and 18 mpg when driven by a 60 year old grand mother.

"Arrh, but it handles well and goes off the road too"

snipped - naughty word ! PU - trainee Mod. If I was the chassis engineer for the 5 series or any of it's competitors and a Cayenne drove better, I would shoot myself. It would be very interesting to see how they really fair off the road. Compare it to a machine that is happy to earn its living off the road, like an L200.

You need to shoot yourself then, I've been in a Cayenne Turbo & my god was it quick, it also corners like it's on rails. Apparently also quite the thing in Saudi & similar for hauling over the sand dunes.
Like for like I'd be surprised if anything else 4 x 4 could corner as quick as the air sprung Cayenne.
ugly ugly ugly - Lud
What is this carp? The Cayenne is just a big fat 4X4, but it's the one you'd have if you wanted to go briskly in that kind of vehicle.

The thing's obviously really good, as it damn well ought to be at that price.

I'd love a go in one. I don't see anything wrong with them at all. There are more of them round here than there are Priuses, and that's saying something. I imagine they use about four times as much fuel as a Prius. What's wrong with that?

Don't think I'd want one. But I really dig them all the same.
ugly ugly ugly - Pugugly {P}
There was a cracking test on Fifth Gear last week, but nobody admits to watching it. According to that test it goes very quickly and handles like a dream. I wouldn't want one, I prefer my old Landie 'cos if I hit a tree in it and scratched its paint it wouldn't worry me. Now in a Porsche I'd be sick as the proverbial parrot sitting in that tree !

"But I really dig them all the same."

How very retro Lud - but expressive nonetheless.

My ''corrigated (sic) steel shed'' only cost me £3,350.00 so I can live with its suspect characterful styling. I was only commenting on the rear quarters of the Cayenne and I think its other flanks look ok. In fact, I would love to borrow one for a few months, provided someone else paid the fuel and insurance costs.
My taste is dubious to say the least...years ago I owned a Marina TC Coupe in purple...says it all really. In mitigation, I did own one of the first Pug 205 Gtis (B211 UCP) which I still consider to look tremendous in silver. Oh, I also had a Fiat 128 estate....

I've been driven round the MIRA track in a Cayenne Turbo too, and yes it was quick. But I would rather go round even quicker in a proper Porsche.

I've also driven round the (very soft) off-road track at the Cayenne factory in Leipzig in a V6 Cayenne. Firstly the air suspension had packed up after only 3,000km, and secondly it conked out in water that, only with some effort, could we get to go over the bonnet.

So the Cayenne is not very good off road, and not very good on road - bit of a compromise all round. It's also small for it's size internally. The only advantage it has is the comand driving position, but then so does a Picasso at a fraction of the price. Pointless, really, IMHO.

Come on!

The Multipla and Regal are design classics

And we all know what the Edsel radiator grill is based on! (sorry if I'm testing the virgin moderator).

I recall Beaulieu (where's the spell check) motor museum had to think seriously about including the Bond three-wheeler - of course they did, but that's a personal opinion.
ugly ugly ugly - Robin Reliant
I pity those who cannot see the subtle beauty of a British design classic, PU.

I cannot understand why the Multipla makes the list, nor the Megane. They are both bold attempts to style a vehicle with a bit of character, the desigers are undoubtably the type of people with whom a night on the town would be an unforgettable experience.

Vauxhall's senior designer, probably somebody called Eric who wears a cardigan and Hush Puppies and holidays in Frinton would do well to study their work. Vauxhalls look so boring they take ugly to a new level.

Actually I think the rear end of the Cayenne is rather reminiscent of the most recent Vectra, or is it the other way around? If it wasn't quite so tall and had some pointless chrome trim and cheap-looking bling added it would be very similar indeed. The Cayenne rear lights could almost come from the Vectra parts bin except that they are a bit bigger.

It's ugly but an awesome piece of engineering. I'm betting that the people slagigng it off are doing so from a posistion of supreme ignorance.

ugly ugly ugly - tyro
When I first saw a photo of the Cayenne a few years ago, my instant reaction was to despise it as ugly, and to despise its manufacturers as crass for putting such a thing on the road.

I still don't think it is visually attractive, but when I was a little boy there was this fairy tale called "Beauty and the Beast". The Beast, as I recall it, was very ugly, but underneath the surface, he was a noble and kind person. (Actually, in my story book, he looked like a lion, and hence didn't strike me as ugly, but that's rather off the point.) While Beauty had initially recoiled from the Beast, she learned that actually he was a decent bloke.

I would tend to take the same view of the Cayenne. Underneath its questionable looks, it is a car with considerable abilities, and would probably be very enjoyable to live with (as long as one didn't mind the running costs and being treated as a complete social pariah, of course!)

How about some older cars? I'd love to have been present at the unveiling of the Austin Maxi. Paticularly vomit inducing in 'Harvest Gold' I seem to remember.......

Chrysler PT Cruiser - viwed from any angle.
ugly ugly ugly - Group B
Yep the Cayenne is ugly, but not as ugly as that new Subaru B9 Tribeca:
consumerguideauto.howstuffworks.com/2006-subaru-b9...m

IMO the Audi Q7 looks a bit rubbish too. Its like the SUV frontal aspect is too large for the corporate front end, so it has to stretch over it to fit, and the result looks wrong.

If I had money to burn on a fast off-roader, I've always liked the idea of a Defender 90 or old Discovery with Chevy 5.7 litre V8, Overfinch style. A utilitarian vehicle that is not supposed to and is not trying to look 'pretty'.

;o)
ugly ugly ugly - Ian (Cape Town)
I don't know if you have the PT Cruiser convertible in the UK.
That is even uglier!
ugly ugly ugly - Brian Tryzers
It is - or has been - available here. We don't see many, which can only be good. Apparently, people (Dale Winton, for one) used to pay premium prices for PT Cruisers, and there were reports of fights on rental car lots over who got the last one. Now, I expect I could get one with the £3.77 in loose change on the table in the hall. But I don't want to.
ugly ugly ugly - Ian (Cape Town)
Dale Winton? Who he?

Oh yes, at the risk of gettled Clarkson'ed, i must admit that the few I've seen about on this side tend to be driven by gentlemen who seem involved in the arts, window-dressing and hairdressing industries...

PT Cruiser, remains, in my eyes, the only seriously cool car on sale in Britain today. After all these years, I still think it looks fantastic.

But . . . only in the "wagon" form. The convertible is, to my eyes, uglier than the Rodius or the Cayenne, and on a par with modern Peugeots.

I do hope I haven't offended anyone with this post ;-)

I quite like the Gremlin JbJ. The one in the photos is absurdly ornate but the basic lines are not seriously misproportioned for a car of its time and country of origin. The Pacer was a similar design more like an inverted fishbowl.

For a really gauche looking motor the first front-wheel-drive Lada takes a bit of beating.
ugly ugly ugly - rtj70
The AMC Pacer was in Wayne's World wasn't it and is very ugly. Door on the passenger side longer than the drivers door. And for a small car it is really wide. Could get it with a V8 mind ;-)

I was attracted to the Pacer when I was a kid in the 70s, I feel the same effect with the Signum...perhaps they are related, we should be told !

They were both part of the first generation of truly Mickey Mouse Detroit cars, what did they call them, supercompacts was it?: Ford Pinto, Chevelle? was it?, crude gutless 2-litre fours, they were all pretty carp and they looked it. In my opinion Detroit's heart wasn't in it. Actually the American Car as such has never recovered from that period.
ugly ugly ugly - Pugugly {P}
Ford struggled to recover from the great Pinto disaster. The only saving grace is that it spawned a very reliable lump of engine.
ugly ugly ugly - Lud
Reliable in a way, cheap to make, tunable to high power outputs, but never ever nice. Crude. Lump is the word for it.

You wouldn't call a Lancia narrow-angle V4 a lump would you?

Just done some googling and surprised that AMC merged with a Renault branded company in late 70s... Chrysler then bought this and discontinued both AMC *and* Renault brand names in USA... you learn every day.

I was also surprised two days ago to find Ian Fleming had written Chitty Chitty Bang Bang as a book.... and the film was produced by Cubby Broccoli! And screenplay by Roald Dahl.

Motor Sport - aka Bill Boddy - was always talking about them (father and son). Hope he still is...
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang may have been a bit of Ian Fleming whimsy turned into Hollywood tat but Chitty Bang Bang 1 and 2 certainly were the stuff of motoring legend.
