Subaru Satnav - Xantiaman
My '54 Forester has the factory fit satnav system. Unfortunately the dvd is well out of date. Subaru want to relieve me of £350 for an updated disc. Given I can get Tom Tom or similar for a lot less it this is a price too far for me.

I've tried looking on ebay but have never seen a Subaru DVD come up. I have established the unit is built by Denso, does anyone know of any other car makers who fit the same system in their car? I'm wondering if I can buy a Nissan DVD or whatever and have my car accrept it.

Any guidance appreciated.

OE satnavs are, in my opinion, always a rip-off to upgrade. I doubt that any other maker's discs would work. Its probably better to get a TomTom - you can then add your own POI's and speedcamera database etc etc at a fraction of the cost.

The alternative is for a group of us Subaru SatNav owners to club together and buy one disc to share.

Anyone in the Northwest prepared to have a go?

I'd love to update mine. I'd be happy to chip in. Could someone copy theirs and check it works ok first? There may be anti-copying software on the dvd. I'd try myself but I don't have a dvd writer.

Seems a bit dodgy to publicise this on an open forum. Subaru UK might get a bit upset

Good point, especially as it's probably illegal.

Probably illegal -There is no probably it is highly illegal.

However the reason the prices are so high is that the software co and the Car manaufacturers have agreed a price. The fact is that that are only about 4 companies that produce the software and it is a "closed market" - Tom Tom & the other "off the shelf" suppliers are volume not £££s per box sellers

Can a disk in a 54-reg car really be so out of date? Our C8 has a Pioneer AVIC unit with a 2003 disc and I only know of one inaccuracy due to a new road in France, that has affected me. But now I know, I know.

My office London A-Z is dated 1992 - and still works fine!

Indeed it does, many thanks.

No Subaru, but after I was quoted £230+VAT cost for a CD for France and the same again for Germay for my A4's satnav. It would be far cheaper to get TomTom for all of Europe.

That's bonkers. The Merc one is £250 or so but at least it cover all of Europe. They're generally available on eBay for 60 quid or so.

Sadly its very out of date. I have version 1 that doesn't know about the M6 toll road! I have also found myself apparently driving over fields in Peterborough and Northants.

Whilst I'm having a gripe (and I really do love the XT) the clock display that shows to fill the screen when the satnav is switched off is so naff it still makes me grate my teeth. It should certainly be better in a car that has a list price in the low £20k's.

PS thanks for the pocketgpsworld link, its very much appreciated
