i would check you had some vanes in your radiator

if its running hot without a thermostat installed i would suspect a blocked rad, the stat is there to regulate the temp of water in the engine block, once it reaches just below boiling point it opens to allow the hot water to circulate the radiator but as you dont have that stat in place the water temp wouldnt reach a high tempreture....fit a new one !!! £3.99 or failing that could be a duff water pump

Hmmm Interesting, The whole stat housing looked as dry as the Sahara ?

Cooling fan may or may not be working; but thats not causing the overheat!
First make sure you have coolant pumping around the system; feel all hoses as engine warms up and see if all hoses get equally hot etc or not.
Check radiator gets even warm/hot all over too.
Strognly suggests radiator/water pump problem.

Does sound like pump gone,if it was working it would take ages to reach normal, if at all without stat

looks like someone couldnt be bothered to change the water pump so took the stat out hoping the water would cool thru conduction or convection, might be ok in the winter months but sitting in traffic on a hot day and you could blow your gasket or a hose or two

Good chance they did not know what was wrong, usually when stat taken out, its because they think its stuck closed, causing the overheating.
